Colonia del Sacramento, a colonial city founded by the Portuguese, is a symbol of the region’s multicultural heritage. After the Spanish occupation, many of the Portuguese who settled in Colonia del Sacramento migrated to Brazil, founding the state of Rio Grande do Sul. “The city is a historical heritage site with a unique architecture that reflects both Portuguese and Spanish influences,” says De Freitas.
Wine Tourism and Local Gastronomy
Another highlight of Colonia is its wine tourism and gastronomy. The western region of the state is known for its small family wineries and almazaras that produce high-quality olive oils and wines. De Freitas recommends that tourists explore this cultural diversity and take advantage of local tastings, taking home wines and typical products such as dulce de leche and cheeses.

Colonia is renowned for its value for money in terms of hotel and gastronomic products. According to De Freitas, the state offers a diverse range of accommodations, from charming and historic guesthouses ideal for couples, to large hotels with pools, spas and activities for children. "It is a friendly city for everyone, including the LGBT+ community, and offers both tranquility and a rich cultural life," he highlights.

For visitors arriving in groups, there are many bars and musicians from Buenos Aires who have set up shop in Colonia, creating an underground art scene. For couples, De Freitas suggests enjoying the sunset while sipping a glass of wine, with spectacular views of the Rio de la Plata and the Buenos Aires skyline in the background. For families, the area’s safety is a big draw, allowing for outdoor activities such as horse riding and cycling, without having to worry too much about the safety of your children.
The Renovated Bullring and Its Versatile Use
The recent restoration of the Plaza de Toros is a major milestone for Colonia. This versatile venue has hosted a variety of events, from concerts with renowned artists such as Plácido Domingo to corporate parties and product launches for major brands. “The Plaza de Toros can accommodate everything from smaller corporate events to large concerts for up to five thousand people,” explains De Freitas. He highlights the venue’s ability to cater for a variety of events, from weddings to conferences, taking advantage of its unique infrastructure.
De Freitas believes that Colonia's tranquility, safety and cultural diversity are its greatest attractions, especially for those seeking a break from big cities and wanting to slow down, appreciating the region's historical and natural riches.
