Marriott International, Inc. and Grupo Fametro, led by Wellington Lins and Maria do Carmo Seffair, announced an agreement to convert an iconic property in the capital city of Amazonas into a Tribute Portfolio Hotel, a collectible brand within the Marriott Bonvoy portfolio known for offering hotels designed to reflect the character and community of their surroundings.

“As the capital city of Amazonas, Manaus serves as a gateway for local and international travelers to access the natural beauty of one of the most spectacular biomes in the world – the Amazon rainforest. The city attracts tourists from around the world, and we are confident that it will be a huge hit with our more than 210 million Marriott Bonvoy members and will contribute significantly to the city’s tourism development,” said Michael Leon, Senior Director of Development for Marriott International in the Caribbean and Latin America. “Tribute Portfolio, part of the Marriott Bonvoy portfolio of more than 30 leading global hotel brands, is a collection of independent hotels with their own character, united by their passion for captivating design and their drive to create vibrant social scenes for guests and locals alike, and we are confident that this property will be the perfect choice within the portfolio.”

Aligned with the independent essence and authenticity of the Tribute Portfolio brand, the property will retain elements of its original architecture. The iconic colonial hotel, opened in March 1976, was recognized as a global destination, attracting prominent and influential celebrities of its time.

This first Tribute Portfolio Hotel in Brazil is anticipated to have a phased reopening beginning in late 2024, featuring spacious guest rooms and suites. The hotel will offer a variety of amenities, such as a large wave pool, fitness center, spa, sports courts, meeting rooms, and a children’s space during its initial phases. Dining options on the property will include several restaurants, including one with a stunning panoramic view of the Rio Negro. Guests will have access to an orchidarium, a chapel, and a dock for boats navigating the Amazon’s Rio Negro, planned for future stages of development.

The property is expected to reintroduce the timeless essence of the former Hotel Tropical to the international tourism scene. “When we heard about the auction of the hotel, we thought we couldn’t let this jewel of Amazonian tourism fall into the hands of people who weren’t Amazonians,” said Fametro Group President Wellington Lins.

Maria do Carmo, representative of the Fametro Group, highlighted the importance of reopening the hotel for tourism in the state of Amazonas. “The world is eager to explore the Amazon, and we will soon offer a genuine immersion experience complemented by the premium amenities the brand is known for. We anticipate this development will drive growth in both the hotel and tourism sectors throughout the country.” Manaus is known as the gateway to the Amazon River, offering visitors and locals alike the opportunity to experience the untouched beauty of the rainforest, explore colonial architecture, and encounter the fascinating wildlife of the region. Visitors will be able to immerse themselves in the rich indigenous culture, delight in local flavors, and create lifelong memories in this authentic destination.”

With nearly 120 hotels in more than 25 countries and territories, Tribute Portfolio resonates with travelers seeking unique, independent experiences and a strong connection to local communities. From boutique resorts like Ermita in Cartagena to urban retreats like Bellyard in Atlanta and Hotel Riomar in Ibiza, each Tribute Portfolio property embraces its distinctiveness, offering guests vibrant, fresh perspectives.

Honoring the history, culture and traditions of the Amazon, the property is making a triumphant return to the heart of Manaus under the Tribute Portfolio brand. This debut in the country showcases the unique charms, vibrant colors, captivating aromas and distinctive flavors of Brazil, as found only in the Amazon .
