Guanacaste Airport receives awards for good environmental practices

Guanacaste Airport, a member of the VINCI Airports network, has received the award in the Climate Change Category of the Ecological Blue Flag Program (PBAE) with six stars, thanks to the efforts implemented to reduce its environmental impacts. 

The Ecological Blue Flag Program (PBAE) annually awards and rewards the effort, work and implementation of actions against climate change. The evaluation includes ten different parameters, of which Guanacaste Airport obtained a perfect score of 100, thus receiving the award equivalent to six stars.

Among the good practices implemented by the airport and which were evaluated are: 

Measurement of water consumption for human use and the production process. 

Reduction in electricity consumption greater than 1%. 

The correct operation and legal compliance of the Wastewater Treatment System.

Reducing paper consumption. 

The measurement and comparison of the generation of recoverable and non-recoverable solid waste.

Application of sustainable purchasing criteria.

The development of an adaptation action plan for the future impact of climate change, environmental education actions, among others.

Guanacaste Airport also has Level 2 of the Airport Carbon Neutrality Accreditation (ACA) awarded by Airports Council International.

More good practices

Aware of the need to implement strategies in favor of the environment, Guanacaste Airport launched the information campaign “Be a Shell Hero” in 2023 with the aim of calling on all passengers to preserve and care for ecosystems such as beaches and national parks and thus reduce the number of confiscations in the terminal.

He also actively participated with ProParques, through FUNDECOES, for the collection of plastic caps, creation, and installation of an accessible walkway in Playa Ostional.

These actions to adapt to the environment represent an enormous source of innovation, efficiency gains and value creation.
