Founded in 1934 as Aeronaves de México, Aeroméxico, as it is now known, has evolved from its first domestic flights to become Mexico’s global airline. Over the years, Aeroméxico has consolidated its role in global aviation, joining the SkyTeam alliance in 2000 and establishing itself as a key gateway between the United States and Mexico through its hub in Mexico City.
A highlight of the anniversary celebration is the unveiling of a unique mixed-media artwork by renowned Mexican-American artist Yehimi Cambrón. This special piece, gifted by Delta to Aeromexico, embodies the theme of “connection” that is central to this milestone. The piece, featuring the monarch butterfly, reflects its deep cultural significance in Mexico and its annual migration between the United States and Mexico, a journey that runs parallel to the extensive network of flights operated by both airlines.
Born in Michoacán, Mexico, and raised in Atlanta, Georgia, Yehimi Cambrón is known for her evocative work centered on the immigrant experience. Her murals in Atlanta highlight the presence and humanity of immigrants, underscoring their complex stories and contributions. The monarch butterfly, central to this artwork, symbolizes not only cultural ties, but also the intricate tapestry of connections fostered by the partnership between Delta and Aeromexico.
“We are proud to celebrate this important milestone for our Aeromexico partners and friends. When we heard about the remarkable migration of the Monarch butterfly, we immediately thought of the vital connections between the United States and Mexico and the important role Aeromexico and Delta play in that connection,” said Alex Antilla, Delta’s vice president for Latin America. “This work of art beautifully symbolizes the deep and long-standing partnership between Aeromexico and Delta, reflecting our shared journey and mutual commitment to building a bright future together for our companies, our countries and the communities we serve.”
Additionally, on the occasion of its 90th anniversary, Aeroméxico is introducing a renewed brand image for its aircraft. This update features an evolved version of the classic Caballero Águila emblem from 1959. The new design, which will adorn the airline's fleet, represents the growth of the brand by incorporating warmth, modernity and a vibrant representation of contemporary Mexico.
Aeromexico’s 90-year history is a testament to its unwavering commitment to connecting people and places, and this anniversary marks a significant milestone in the airline’s storied legacy. This dedication to connection is further strengthened through the Joint Cooperation Agreement (JCA) with Delta, which has significantly expanded its network. Since December 2023, the number of routes has grown from 53 to 70, connecting 13 Mexican airports to 26 U.S. airports. By the end of 2024, the JCA will support more than 110 daily flights between Mexico and the United States on nearly 70 routes, reinforcing the vital partnership between these two airlines.
