To strengthen the resilience of the region's tourist destinations and exchange experiences and best practices in climate change adaptation and mitigation, the State Secretariat of Tourism (SEDETUR), in alliance with the State Secretariat of Ecology and Environment, the Iberostar Group, and the Mexican-German Cooperation (GIZ), today inaugurated the Third Edition of the Climate Action Forum in the Mexican Caribbean.
This forum, which was held within the framework of World Tourism Day 2024, a date celebrated every September 27 and this year under the motto “Tourism and Peace”, aims to strengthen the resilience of tourist destinations in the region.
Regarding this, the head of SEDETUR, Bernardo Cueto Riestra, commented: “Climate change represents a real threat to our planet and, in particular, to the tourism industry in Quintana Roo. However, we also see tourism as an ally in this fight. Our adherence to the Glasgow Declaration on climate action in tourism underlines our commitment to the protection of our ecosystems, especially coastal areas.”
During the event, initiatives such as the Coastal Dunes Restoration Project were highlighted, which exemplifies the collaboration between the private, academic and environmental sectors. In addition, participatory workshops were held for the Sustainable Tourism Master Plan, aligned with the Strategic Plan for Sustainable Development of Quintana Roo and with a projection towards 2050.
18 S Distinctions (Sustainability Guarantee) and two Health Tourism Seals were also awarded to hotels that have reaffirmed their commitment to sustainability and health, which contribute to the tourism competitiveness of Quintana Roo.
Cueto Riestra reiterated that Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa has emphasized her dedication to implementing a new tourism development model that prioritizes sustainability so that prosperity reaches all Quintana Roo residents, as established in the New Agreement for the Well-being and Development of Quintana Roo.
During the day, different activities were held, such as the Conservatory of Public Policies for a Sustainable Future; simultaneous workshops on the Sustainable Tourism Master Plan,
How to integrate climate action into tourism operations?, the Coastal Dunes Restoration Project in Quintana Roo, and Advances by the private sector in the implementation of coastal dune restructuring actions in Quintana Roo, among others.
It is worth mentioning that the Iberostar Group has been a key player through its Wave of Changes Sustainability programme, promoting concurrent actions to address climate change and its impact on the tourism sector.
