Meliá Hotels International, the leading hotel chain in Spain, has launched a campaign through its Meliá Hotels & Resorts brand to promote sustainable transport, in collaboration with Renfe. This initiative seeks to motivate travellers to choose more sustainable options and make travel decisions that minimise their environmental impact.
Recognised by TIME magazine as the most sustainable hotel company in the world and leader in Europe according to the Sustainability Yearbook by S&P Global, the company is committed to a more responsible business model through its Travel for Good programme, which implements a set of initiatives with a positive social and environmental impact, and which also aims to inspire its customers to consider sustainable travel practices, not only in accommodation, but also in transport.
For this reason, Meliá and Renfe have launched the initiative called “Reward trip: good for the planet, good for you”, which aims to reward those who choose to travel sustainably by train, whose carbon emissions can be up to five times lower than those of other means of transport.
To take advantage of this promotion, guests staying at any hotel in the Meliá brand portfolio in Spanish destinations where Renfe's AVE, Avant and ALVIA long-distance trains operate will only have to present their train ticket at the hotel to obtain 1,000 extra MeliáRewards points and 100 Renfecitos, which they can accumulate or redeem for advantages and benefits. This campaign will be active for the next three months.
Both Meliá and Renfe have redoubled their efforts to improve the energy efficiency of their services and reduce their carbon emissions. Therefore, for Meliá this collaboration not only reinforces its commitment to sustainability, but also creates a positive synergy that can influence the behavior of travelers throughout the entire Tourism value chain and encourage more responsible travel practices.
This action is also in line with the Decalogue of the Responsible Traveler that the company presented in 2020, with ten recommendations to improve the travel experience through knowledge and respect for the environment, and which includes the use of public transport.
Travel for Good, prioritizing a sustainable tourism strategy
Travel for Good is Meliá's program to promote its responsible business strategy, which addresses sustainability as a fundamental lever to transform the tourism model and ensure a positive legacy on the planet and in society.
This programme is structured around four axes: Good for the Planet, which includes the hotel chain's environmental projects and decarbonisation objectives; Good for our People, focused on the development and well-being of its employees; Good for the Community, which seeks to contribute to the social and economic progress of local communities; and Governance for Good, which ensures an ethical and responsible commitment to stakeholders. Each of these lines is embodied in different actions and projects, which support the company's commitments to the United Nations 2030 Agenda.
