For the twelfth (12th) time, Peru has been chosen as the “Best Culinary Destination in the World” at the World Travel Awards 2024, an international competition in which countries known for their gastronomy such as Mexico, Italy and Japan, as well as Argentina and Colombia, also participated.
Peruvian cuisine is distinguished by its rich history, the fusion of diverse cultures and its exceptional climatic conditions, which favor the cultivation of unique ingredients. This combination transforms Peruvian cuisine into an unforgettable culinary experience, beyond simple tasting.
In addition, Peruvian superfoods, the basis of many traditional recipes, are gaining popularity globally. Peru's geographical conditions allow for the cultivation of these products, which further highlights the richness and diversity of its gastronomy.
By August 2024, USD 12,089 million in non-traditional exports have been reached, with superfoods such as fresh avocados (USD 1,161 million), fresh blueberries (USD 546 million), fresh grapes (USD 499 million) and cocoa beans, whole or ground (USD 496 million) leading the list.
Profile of the gastronomic tourist visiting Peru
Foreign tourists perceive Peruvian cuisine as authentic and traditional, especially valuing its natural and organic ingredients, the use of seasonal products and creativity in the blending of flavours.
To further enrich the gastronomic experience, they highlight the importance of offering cooking classes, proximity to tourist sites, entertainment such as cultural shows and, of course, the offer of pisco-based drinks.
According to studies carried out by PROMPERÚ, in 2023, 175,049 foreign vacationers arrived in Peru through the Jorge Chávez airport, with one of their motivations being to try Peruvian cuisine, of which 61% come from Latin America, mainly Chile.
Of the total number of foreign visitors, 54% are millennials and spend approximately USD 1,237 during their visit to Peru, USD 196 more than the average tourist. In addition, their favorite destinations are mainly Lima, Cusco and Ica, places where they stay on average 10 nights.
Promotion of Peruvian gastronomy
PROMPERÚ manages the gastronomic tourism strategy through "Perú Mucho Gusto" to promote regional gastronomy and encourage national tourism. The fair seeks to revalue regional gastronomic traditions and customs. In its last edition in Lima, the fair attracted 182 thousand visitors, exceeding expectations.
It is important to mention that according to the World Food Travel Association, the main authority on gastronomic tourism, this sector generates an annual economic impact of US$150 billion worldwide (pre-pandemic estimate).
