Tourism GDP in Mexico grew 4.4 percent, amounting to 2 trillion 582 billion pesos

Mexico's Secretary of Tourism, Josefina Rodríguez Zamora, reported that GDPT registered a growth rate of 4.4% in 2023 compared to the previous year, a figure higher than the growth of the total national GDP, which increased by 3.2%

Based on the 2023 Satellite Account of Tourism in Mexico from the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI), the head of the Ministry of Tourism stated that the participation of Tourism GDP within the national GDP was 8.6%, placing it above the Tourism GDP of countries such as New Zealand 3.7%, Australia 2.5%, and Colombia 2.3%.

He said that during 2023, tourism-related activities generated approximately 2.8 million paid jobs, equivalent to a growth of 3.1% compared to 2022, which represented 7.2% of the total paid jobs in the country.

Rodríguez Zamora highlighted that GDPT was mainly made up of accommodation services, which accounted for 20.9%; passenger transportation, 19%; restaurants, bars and nightclubs, 15.7%; and goods and crafts, 13.9%.

On the other hand, he pointed out that Domestic Tourism Consumption registered 4 trillion 251 billion current pesos. By components, the expenditure made by residents of Mexico (Domestic Consumption) stands out with 83.7% of the total; while the expenditure of international visitors (Inbound Consumption) is equivalent to 16.3%.

The head of Sectur added that the spending recorded by residents of Mexico (Domestic Tourism Consumption) was mainly for other travel reasons with 41.2%, vacations with 29.4%, excursionists with 12.1%, pre-trip expenses 11.7% and business 5.6%.

Likewise, for Inbound Tourism Consumption (International Tourists), spending for vacation reasons stands out with 78.2%, other travel reasons contributed with 13.6%, excursionists 5.5% and business reasons represented 2.7% of the total.

He indicated that Domestic Tourism Consumption was mainly destined for transportation with 26.3%, accommodation services, electricity, gas, water and other fuels with 23.9%, restaurants and hotels with 16.1% and food and non-alcoholic beverages participated with 11.5%.

During 2023, the main economic activities that contributed to the National GDP were: Manufacturing industries with 21.6%, Commerce with 19.8%, Real estate services and rental of movable and intangible assets 9.1%, Tourism 8.6% and Construction 7.2%.

Secretary Josefina Rodríguez Zamora welcomed these results and highlighted that during the current administration, actions have been promoted to consolidate tourism activity as a generator of well-being and jobs, with special attention to strengthening Community Tourism.
