The American newspaper The New York Times, one of the most important and influential publications in the world, makes a list of the “52 places to visit” every year. In this 2025 edition, they have included Ollantaytambo, in Cusco, for its monumental buildings, varied gastronomic offering and its colorful markets.
The experts at this renowned media outlet took into account the gastronomy, culture, adventure and natural beauty offered by each of the selected destinations and invite travelers to visit them.
In the case of Ollantaytambo, they highlighted its fortress where the Incas fought against the conquistadors, as well as its cobblestone streets where you can find comfortable cafes, colorful souvenir shops and restaurants that offer dishes that highlight the products and flavors of the region. In addition, it is possible to go on hiking trails around the city.
The newspaper also noted that Peru is also promoting archaeological sites in an effort to expand and diversify the region's tourist offering and preserve the Historic Sanctuary of Machu Picchu.
It is worth noting that, in 2023, TIME magazine, another important media outlet in the United States, included Ollantaytambo in its list of the “50 best places in the world.” On that occasion, the publication highlighted impressive architecture, delicious cuisine and sustainable accommodations.
OLLANTAYTAMBO: AN ARCHITECTURAL GEM
The town of Ollantay - as the locals call it - was a strategic military, religious and agricultural centre that still dazzles with its stone terraces and its imposing buildings over four metres high. Located 80 km from the city of Cusco, in the province of Urubamba, and 40 km from Machu Picchu, this archaeological zone has preserved over time its houses, streets and canals from the Tahuantinsuyu era.
