In this context, Travel2latam spoke with Pablo Aguilar, Representative of the Quintana Roo Tourism Promotion Council in Cozumel.

What are the objectives of Cozumel's participation here at FITUR?

It is very important for us to show people, visitors, that Cozumel has much more to offer than just sun and beach, which of course is one of the main attractions. Diving is very important, we are part of the second largest barrier reef in the world, and of course, we have a lot of culture since Cozumel is the sanctuary of the Goddess Ixchel for the Mayans. Also, the first Catholic mass that was celebrated in Mexican territory was in Cozumel when Hernán Cortés arrived from Cuba. In addition, we have archaeological ruins, adventure tourism, and luxury tourism, because there are very luxurious properties.

Tell us about the luxury tourism you receive…

Within the same diversification, we seek to attract high-spending tourism, both in terms of luxury cruises, which are beginning to arrive in Cozumel after many years, and in terms of properties. We try to provide them with that experience of tranquility and security, which is very important. We are one of the safest municipalities in all of Mexico, and we want this type of tourism to feel at home when they visit us.

What are your goals for this year outside of this fair?

The objective for us is of course to increase the number of flights we receive. We are working on this here at Fitur, so we are going to have some meetings with the mayor. We also want to announce the opening of a new hotel and increase connectivity.
