United Airlines will launch a new daily direct route between San Francisco International Airport, United States, and Juan Santamaría International Airport, as announced on its official platforms.

The inaugural flight will depart from the west coast of the United States at 11:34 p.m. local time and arrive in our country at 7:15 a.m. From Costa Rica, the departure will be on May 23 at 8:45 a.m., arriving in San Francisco at 2:34 p.m., on a Boeing 737-MAX8 aircraft.

William Rodríguez, Minister of Tourism, stressed the importance of increasing connectivity with the city of San Francisco and thereby continuing to strengthen the arrival of American tourists to the country.

“Increasing connectivity with the United States is essential for our country, as it is our main source market for travelers. We are an ideal destination for American tourists, who love contact with nature, outdoor activities, traveling as a couple or with the family, in addition to proximity, hence the attraction and establishment of new air routes strengthen our destination and the tourism sector. We thank United Airlines for their trust in opening this new direct connection from one of the cities that concentrate thousands of American travelers with a high interest in traveling to Costa Rica, and this flight could even improve connectivity with potential Canadian tourists,” said William Rodríguez, Minister of Tourism.

United will now connect San Jose to all seven of its U.S. hubs, building on its position as the largest U.S. carrier to Costa Rica and Central America.

For his part, Frederick Thome, Director of Sales for Central America and the Andean Region, said: “With 34 years of service to Costa Rica, our commitment at United Airlines is to connect people and unite the world, and the increase in frequencies and destinations to major cities in the U.S. allows us to have a wide network of travel options for our customers to meet their travel needs.”

“This new direct flight between Juan Santamaría International Airport and the city of San Francisco represents a significant milestone for Costa Rica’s connectivity with the west coast of the United States. We are pleased to work closely with United Airlines and the Costa Rican Tourism Board (ICT) to offer passengers greater accessibility and comfort. This route will not only strengthen commercial and tourism ties between both destinations, but also reaffirms AERIS’ commitment to continue improving the traveler experience and positioning Costa Rica as a key destination in the region,” said Ricardo Hernández, Executive Director of AERIS.

New Tourists from San Francisco
San Francisco, California is among the 11 American cities that host the best prospects or tourists with high interest in traveling to Costa Rica on their next vacation. Most of them are people between the ages of 29 and 39, with incomes between US $100,000 and US $150,000 per year, college graduates, married with children and interested in visiting countries that promote sustainable tourism.

They are also nature lovers, interested in cultural and gastronomic activities, practicing sports, among others, according to the "Most recent Study of the Best Prospects: United States Market", conducted by the ICT.

From January to August of this year, 1,954,611 tourists have visited us by air, with the United States being the main source market with the arrival of 1,206,191 tourists.

The United States remains the main source market for tourists to our country, and tourist arrivals from this country represent 53.6% of total arrivals to Costa Rica and 81% of arrivals from North America. Although we are visited regularly throughout the year, the seasonality of the US market is marked in the months of December to March and June to July, when the largest number of arrivals to Costa Rica from the United States occur.
