SKY Airline avoided the emission of more than 315 thousand tons of CO2 during 2024

This figure was achieved thanks to the use of technology to optimize the operation of the airline's routes, as well as the use of a state-of-the-art fleet, and is equivalent to 30,700 flights between Santiago and Puerto Montt or 42,564 flights between Cusco and Lima

January 28 marks the World Day for the Reduction of CO2 Emissions, an important date to reflect on environmental protection and initiatives that promote sustainability. In this context, SKY Airline has positioned itself as one of the least polluting airlines in the region, thanks to its modern 100% neo fleet and the use of technologies to optimize fuel use in its operations. As a result of this, in 2024 alone, the airline has avoided 315,624 tons of CO2, a figure equivalent to 12,898 flights between Santiago and Lima, for example.

“At SKY, we have worked hard to implement various options that have led us to reduce our environmental footprint. For some time now, we have been using artificial intelligence models that help us optimize the operation of our routes, achieving even greater efficiency in the use of fuel during takeoffs and landings, which are the times of greatest consumption. In addition to the above, we have the efficiency of our 100% Airbus “neo” fleet, which is designed to be significantly more efficient and therefore less polluting. Today we have a fleet made up of 29 Airbus 320neo and 7 Airbus 321neo,” said Mayra Kohler, Corporate Affairs and Sustainability Manager at SKY.

In addition to using a 100% neo fleet, the airline has implemented software that optimizes the ascent of the aircraft, achieving an average saving of 220 kg of CO2 per flight. It has also included strategies such as contingency fuel optimization and other operational efficiency strategies; this action alone has allowed a reduction of 24 thousand tons of CO2 emissions in the last year.

The actions implemented by the airline - which have contributed to significantly reducing its carbon footprint - have a huge impact on the environment. "Avoiding the emission of more than 315 thousand tons of CO2 is equivalent to planting more than 5 million trees that grow for a full year or removing from circulation approximately 68 thousand cars that travel 20 thousand kilometers per year," said the executive.

“In a world that is increasingly aware of the climate crisis, those of us involved in the aeronautical industry have a responsibility to fulfil in order to achieve the long-awaited goal of having net zero emissions by 2050. Therefore, within the framework of the World Day for the Reduction of CO2, we want to reaffirm our commitment to sustainability and our role as a leader in responsible aviation. With concrete initiatives and tangible results, we have positioned ourselves as a key player in the search for more efficient and planet-friendly air transport,” added Kohler.
