As part of its ongoing commitment to sustainable development and the well-being of the communities where it operates, Royal Caribbean International has announced a partnership with the MARES Center, an organization focused on the restoration and conservation of coastal ecosystems in Mahahual, Quintana Roo. The collaboration is aligned with Royal Caribbean Group's SEA the Future commitment, which seeks to offer the best vacation experiences in a responsible manner, caring for the planet, empowering communities and promoting innovation.
As part of this partnership, Royal Caribbean will allocate a fund of $50,000 US dollars, which will be focused on ecosystem restoration and educational activities. The initiative includes a comprehensive project to restore mangroves, dunes and seagrass beds, essential for the conservation of coral reefs and other marine species. The goal is to restore 20 hectares of critical ecosystems through actions such as the recovery of hydrological flow in mangroves, the replanting of native species on the coast and the active conservation of seagrass beds. To achieve these conservation objectives, priority will be given to hiring local residents, generating direct employment and encouraging community participation.
The partnership also includes a strong environmental education and community training component that provides the community with tools and knowledge to support ecosystem sustainability and restoration. Actions range from educational workshops for children, the community and private sector employees to training local women in diving and marine conservation.
Restoration activities are scheduled to begin in 2025, once the necessary preparations have been completed and the most suitable areas for the works have been confirmed.
More details about the alliance and its results will be announced throughout the year.
With a sustainability journey that began more than 30 years ago, Royal Caribbean Group introduced an industry-leading recycling program, Save the Waves, and the first Environmental Officer on board a cruise ship. Today, the company continues to innovate and connect people to the world’s most beautiful destinations in a way that respects and protects the ocean and the communities it visits. Focused on improving its energy efficiency, treating the water it uses and reducing landfill waste, the company is moving ever closer to its “Destination Net Zero” ambition, its goal to achieve net zero emissions by 2050.
