The high-level meeting, hosted by the Government of the United Arab Emirates and taking place in Abu Dhabi from 10 to 12 February, highlights the international community’s strong political support for ICAO’s efforts to promote sustainable aviation development worldwide.
“Across our 193 Member States, the implementation of ICAO standards and strategies helps shape and promote broader economic development, social progress and environmental protection,” said ICAO Council President Salvatore Sciacchitano at the GISS Ministerial Roundtable. “The path to sustainable aviation currently varies considerably between States, and your presence here demonstrates both commitment and progress towards our shared goals.”
“Ministers are addressing sustainability and environmental stewardship, and examining how to achieve responsible growth in line with our long-term global aspirational goal of net-zero carbon emissions,” said ICAO Secretary General Juan Carlos Salazar. “Their strategies include developing and implementing standards to reduce the climate impact of civil aviation and promoting investment mechanisms such as the Finvest Hub, an innovative platform that connects investors with sustainable aviation projects, particularly in developing countries, which will support States in financing important infrastructure projects for better environmental stewardship.”
Several important agreements are expected to be signed during the three-day event, including significant advances in aviation financing and sustainable fuel production. The symposium also coincides with the UAE’s launch of the Global Sustainable Aviation Markets (GSAM), a collaborative platform designed to accelerate the decarbonisation of aviation through the expansion of sustainable aviation fuel production and innovative financing mechanisms.
The event showcases ICAO's leadership in delivering practical solutions for the development of sustainable aviation, with a particular focus on supporting resource-constrained States through technical assistance and targeted implementation support.
The symposium will be broadcast live on ICAO TV (www.icao.tv/global-implementation-support-symposium). Keynote sessions include:
Opening Ceremony (February 10)
Skytalks with industry leaders (February 10)
Sessions on innovation in artificial intelligence and aviation (February 11)
Panels on sustainable aviation fuels and updates from the FINVEST centre (February 12)
Closing ceremony with announcement of GISS 2026 (February 12)
The symposium will continue until February 12, 2025, and further announcements on major funding initiatives and implementation agreements are expected.
