IATA and 123Carbon to collaborate on SAF registration interoperability

This will increase transparency, prevent errors in emissions reporting (including double issuance) and streamline certificate management across all SAF registries

The collaboration between IATA and 123Carbon will focus on three key elements:

A unique identifier and alignment of relevant data points to be exchanged between registries.
A process for information exchange to avoid any potential double issuance.
A dispute resolution process.
“User trust is essential. The transparency that comes with interoperability will ensure our registries can work cohesively to maximise the potential of SAF to support aviation decarbonisation. The broader the alignment between registry providers, the better. We welcome all entities active in this field to work with IATA and 123Carbon towards global interoperability between all registries,” said Marie Owens Thomsen, Senior Vice President, Sustainability and Chief Economist, IATA.

“123Carbon is committed to establishing integrity and trust in the market for Environmental Attribute Certificates (EACs) in multimodal transport (e.g. air, sea, road and rail). With IATA, we have found a strong partner in the aviation sector that shares our beliefs. This collaboration enables SAF providers, airlines, shippers and corporate entities to use our platforms without the worry of double issuance, while managing their SAF certificates digitally on our platform,” said Jeroen van Heiningen, CEO of 123Carbon.

IATA and 123Carbon will seek the participation of other SAF stakeholders to join this initiative to deepen interaction between registries.

About the IATA SAF Registry

The IATA SAF Registry will be launched in April 2025 with the aim of facilitating the widest possible use of SAF in decarbonising aviation by standardising the SAF certificate market. SAF certificates are issued after a batch of SAF is registered and contain information on the product and environmental attributes. As part of its preparation for the launch of the Registry, IATA recently published the IATA SAF Accounting and Reporting Methodology.

The development of the IATA SAF Registry is supported by more than 50 organisations, including airlines, fuel producers and state authorities. In developing the IATA SAF Registry, IATA is also consulting with a broad range of SAF stakeholders, including 123Carbon.

About 123Carbon

With over 50 users worldwide, 123Carbon is the first independent platform for carbon emissions integration across all transport modes. It supports fuel suppliers, fleet operators, shippers and cargo owners in issuing, managing and transferring Environmental Attribute Certificates (EACs) across all modes and all technologies, including SAF. In addition to the central registry, 123Carbon also offers a private Book & Claim solution that SAF providers and airlines can use to allocate company-branded SAF certificates to their customers in a private setting. This is also seen as a key tool for shippers operating across different transport modes and looking for a one-stop solution to allocate their environmental benefits.
