Meliá Hotels International has been included in the S&P Global Sustainability Yearbook for the seventh consecutive year. After analysing nearly 7,690 companies from around the world through the Corporate Sustainability Annual Assessment (CSA), the most prestigious international report in the field of sustainability once again highlights Meliá's performance in the tourism sector.
Specifically, the leading agency in financial ratings and market analysis S&P Global places Meliá in third place, behind the Thai company Asset World Corporation - specialised in real estate investment, also with hotel assets - and the technology company Amadeus, being the first hotel company in the ranking.
Meliá's environmental performance ratings demonstrate an outstanding climate strategy and solid environmental management. The company has set a global target of reducing CO2 emissions by 71.4% by 2035 compared to 2018, and has established a reporting model to rigorously and reliably monitor indicators on carbon footprint, energy and water consumption, in order to make progress in its commitments.
To achieve this, the company has invested in efficient facilities and the purchase of green energy, among other measures, in addition to promoting different projects to reduce the carbon footprint, such as the CO2PERATE Project, focused on optimizing the air conditioning system to reduce energy consumption using artificial intelligence; or the Road to Net Zero Events program, which seeks to minimize the environmental impact of large-scale events.
In the social dimension, the S&P Global assessment highlights Meliá's commitment to human capital management and the defence of Human Rights. The hotel chain, certified as a Top Employer Enterprise, maintains a strong commitment to talent development, offering a work environment based on equality and diversity, training opportunities and professional growth, with 75% of vacancies filled through internal promotion. Furthermore, through its Diversity Policy, the company has committed to promoting a greater presence of women in management positions, reducing gender inequalities, fighting against harassment and discrimination and favouring the social inclusion of vulnerable groups.
In the economic and corporate governance field, Meliá has obtained a score of 100 points in Transparency and Reporting, also standing out in aspects such as business ethics and tax strategy.
Travel for Good is Meliá's programme designed to reinforce and highlight the company's commitments and progress in the ESG field. This programme covers four fundamental axes: the planet, caring for people, community development and good corporate governance. Through objectives and initiatives developed in each of the dimensions in the field of sustainability, the company aims to improve and disseminate its positive impact on the environment and contribute not only to greater economic development of the destinations in which it operates, but also to contribute to the progress of its communities.
“We are very proud to be included in this yearbook for the seventh consecutive year, which supports our commitment to responsible tourism and reinforces Meliá's track record of leadership and success in creating a more sustainable tourism model that generates long-term value in destinations,” said Gabriel Escarrer, President and CEO of Meliá Hotels International.
To compile the Sustainability Yearbook, S&P combines publicly available information from companies with a comprehensive Corporate Sustainability Assessment (CSA). Of all the companies assessed worldwide, only 780 have been included in the 2025 Yearbook.
