2025, a year with new challenges for commercial aviation

With demand on the rise, connectivity in Latin America and the Caribbean will be key to continued growth during this season

According to a report by ALTA, December 2024 closed with 42.7 million passengers in Latin America and the Caribbean (+2.4% vs. 2023), completing 45 consecutive months of year-on-year growth and consolidating the highest annual traffic in the history of the region. This translates into 996,792 more passengers compared to the previous year. 

With an annual total of 475.6 million passengers (+5% vs. 2023), the region outpaced GDP growth, which increased 2.1% according to the International Monetary Fund.

Breaking down by market, the domestic segment accounted for half of total growth, with 22.6 million passengers in December (+2.2% year-on-year), the second highest figure of the year after July. 

In addition, 192,567 flights were operated, highlighting:

BOG-SMR (Bogotá - Santa Marta): Higher growth in the domestic segment (+28% vs. 2023).

CGH-SDU (Congonhas - Santos Dumont): Busiest route in the region, with 3,058 frequencies.

In the intraregional segment, traffic between countries in the region grew by 6.4%, reaching 4.8 million passengers, with an 11% increase in flights operated (49,635 in total). 

The main drivers were Brazil - Chile, with a 40% growth in passenger traffic. And Uruguay had an expansion of 72%, with three airlines operating key routes, including the new PDE-SCL connection (Punta del Este - Santiago).

Extra-LAC segment:

International traffic grew by 1.4%, reaching 15.3 million passengers.

North America: Highest absolute growth, with 3,142 additional frequencies (+3.6% year-on-year).

Europe: Growth of 4.9%, totaling 10,969 flights (+500 frequencies)

The GRU-MAD route (Guarulhos - Madrid) was the one that saw the greatest growth, with a 56% increase in frequencies.
