"It is with great enthusiasm that I begin my role as CEO of the Latin American and Caribbean Air Transport Association (ALTA), a position I assume alongside my current responsibilities as Regional Vice President for the Americas of the International Air Transport Association (IATA), to address the needs of its members, including the airlines responsible for more than 80% of the region's air traffic, and to promote a more integrated, efficient, and sustainable aeronautical ecosystem.
Aviation is key to the social and economic prosperity of our region. Air transport generated 8.3 million jobs and contributed $240 billion to Latin America and the Caribbean's GDP in 2023. ALTA plays a fundamental role in making this mode of transport more accessible to a greater number of people, connecting communities, and boosting tourism, trade, and job creation in our countries.
The challenges are enormous, which is why ALTA's path ahead is one of collaboration and innovation: working side by side and through open and transparent dialogue with governments and industry partners. Our objective is clear: to modernize regulatory frameworks, boost competitiveness, and improve infrastructure to meet future demands. Sustainability will be our starting point, ensuring progress in harmony with the environment and adapted to our regional context.
I reaffirm my commitment to the Latin American and Caribbean aviation community to promote an aviation industry that connects destinations, creates opportunities, and protects the planet. I appreciate the trust placed in me by the Executive Committee, and with a dedicated and talented team at my side, I pledge to lead this new chapter of ALTA with passion and vision. Together, we will reach new heights, creating a more prosperous and connected future for air transport in Latin America and the Caribbean," Peter Cerdá, CEO of ALTA.
