The Dominican Republic is listed as one of the "9 Affordable Caribbean Islands for a Getaway" in a selection compiled by the specialized website Condé Nast Traveler.
The publication highlights that the cheapest times to travel are typically between April and June, or in November (when hurricane season is ending).
For a truly affordable vacation experience, they recommend visiting Puerto Plata, Samaná, or Las Terrenas.
They encourage you to create a customized itinerary, where you can visit artisans in the markets. They indicate that "Chef Inés Páez, an island resident, told Traveler that she recommends travelers head to the Malecón Livestock Fair market on George Washington Avenue in Santo Domingo, or to the Mercado Modelo on Mella Avenue, north of the colonial zone, a landmark on the island." She also highlights that there, you can meet the local artisans, farmers, chefs, and entrepreneurs who make the island so special, and while you're at it, pick up some affordable yet well-made artisanal treats to take home.
In Las Terrenas, a secluded but always charming town on the Samaná Peninsula, they say you'll find a charming little town with soft sand beaches and crystal-clear waters. It's very walkable and has plenty of local restaurants and a laid-back nightlife; it's also a great spot for clubbing. They recommend visiting El Limón waterfall or snorkeling at the lively but underdeveloped Playa Jackson. (This region of the island was also recommended by Vogue in 2023, they note.)
