Central Florida stands out as an exemplary destination for inclusion and accessibility. For families with children with special needs or sensory disabilities, this charming region in the heart of Florida, home to cities such as Lakeland, Davenport, Lake Wales, and Winter Haven, offers truly welcoming experiences.

Since 2008, when the United Nations (UN) established April 2 as World Autism Awareness Day, attention to the inclusion of people with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) has grown worldwide. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), 1 in 100 children has autism, although in Latin America the figures vary by country and the availability of studies. In Mexico, it is estimated that 1 in 115 children has ASD, while in Colombia the prevalence exceeds 85 cases per 10,000 children. However, in many countries in the region, official data is still lacking.

Given this reality, the need for tourist destinations to be prepared to welcome families with autistic members, providing enjoyable and safe experiences for all, is growing. This is even more so considering that many of them face difficulties when visiting new places, whether due to a lack of staff training, potential sensory overload, or the need for flexible accommodation options.

In this context, the cities of Central Florida, strategically located between Orlando and Tampa, stand out. The region is committed to creating a truly inclusive environment in the heart of Florida. So much so that its main attractions have implemented specific measures to ensure everyone can fully enjoy the experiences offered:

PEPPA PIG THEME PARK - A pioneer as the first theme park in the Americas to receive the Certified Autism Center (CAC) designation from the IBCCES, the world leader in professional training and certification in autism and neurodiversity, offers detailed sensory guides, trained staff, quiet areas, and sensory kits for its visitors.

LEGOLAND® FLORIDA RESORT - The entire resort, including the theme park and hotels, is also CAC certified. Its attractions are ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) compliant and offer resources such as sensory guides, low-stimulation areas, and specialized kits.

FLORIDA CHILDREN'S MUSEUM - Located in Bonnet Springs Park, Lakeland, the museum was designed with inclusion in mind. From the layout to the acoustics, everything has been planned to provide an enriching experience for all children, including lighting control, sound absorption, and wheelchair accessibility. The space offers a quiet room and comprehensive sensory kits.

BOK TOWER GARDENS - Recognized as "Autism Friendly" by the University of South Florida's Center for Autism and Related Disabilities, this garden collaborates with specialists to make the visit special and enjoyable for everyone.

Central Florida has proven that fun and inclusion can—and should—go hand in hand, creating unforgettable memories for all families, regardless of their specific needs. And the region represents a unique opportunity for visitors to discover a different side of Florida, combining convenience, comfort, and diverse attractions for everyone!
