The Registry, now managed by CADO, will facilitate a global SAF market that will accelerate the transition to net-zero emissions by 2050.

Aviation decarbonization is a team effort. By launching the SAF Registry at CADO, we have established a crucial platform for the benefit of all stakeholders. It ensures that all airlines worldwide have access to SAF and that their SAF purchases can be deducted from any climate-related obligations in this area. The Registry will record the environmental attributes of SAF purchases immutably, avoiding double counting. Airlines, their corporate customers, fuel producers, regulators, and all related organizations will be able to record and account for their SAF transactions in a global SAF market. While this is critical and a momentous historic advance, it is only one step on the path to a mature, transparent, and liquid global SAF market. The Registry cannot perform miracles on its own, but without it, miracles cannot be performed.

Moving forward requires active policy support for the gradual increase of all renewable energy production, and for SAF within that production. Governments must reallocate the direct support they provide to fossil fuel producers to renewable energy production. The precedent of the wind and solar energy markets is the example to follow, and this without further delay," said Marie Owens Thomsen, IATA's Senior Vice President for Sustainability and Chief Economist.
