Barú Volcano National Park: A visit to the highest point in Panama

The volcano and the surrounding land are home to five distinct ecosystems thanks to a combination of mountainous tropical rainforest regions, as well as the aftermath of volcanic eruptions that occurred millions of years ago.

Barú Volcano National Park is located in the province of Chiriquí. Thanks to the area's volcanic soil, the internationally renowned Geisha coffee is produced here. This premium coffee is grown at high altitudes and is one of the most expensive coffee varieties in the world. Be sure to bring some with you when you visit!

Barú Volcano has seven craters and several hiking trails you can take to view them. Some trails are quite challenging, while others are shorter and more accessible. If you have a lot of hiking experience, you can make the epic trek to the top of the volcano through the town of Volcán. This demanding hike can take up to eight hours round trip. If you want to reach the summit more easily, you can enter the park in the town of Boquete, from where you can reach the summit by SUV in approximately 90 minutes or by hiking a longer but easier trail. Upon reaching the summit, you'll find yourself at the highest point in Panama. If your timing is right, stay to enjoy an incredible sunset over the clouds or consider camping there to enjoy a night close to the stars.

How to Get There
: Barú Volcano is located in the Chiriquí Mountains, surrounded by the towns of Boquete, Volcán, and Cerro Punta. Access to the park is in Boquete, where most hikes and tours begin.
