Costa Rica has had very positive years in tourism. What is the country's current biggest challenge?

The last two years have been very good for tourism in Costa Rica, which represents a significant challenge: maintaining this level of sustained growth in 2023 and 2024. Despite the global uncertainty, we are convinced that our tourism product perfectly meets what travelers are looking for today. Costa Rica is synonymous with nature, well-being, and sustainability, values that are more relevant today than ever.

Which areas of the country are developing most strongly?

Papagayo is a region that has experienced phenomenal growth. Less than a decade ago, it was an emerging area and today it is a consolidated hub for tourism development. Although we face challenges such as road capacity, regional airports are being strengthened, allowing for better distribution of both visitors and residents.

The MICE segment has also grown considerably. What's new in this sector?

This year is especially significant because we will host FIEXPO Latin America for the next three years, beginning in July. For Costa Rica, attracting this event represents recognition of the work we have been doing. It will be a key opportunity to showcase our Costa Rica Convention Center—a modern, sustainable, and versatile space—as well as our service offerings, the warmth of the people, and the natural environment that make Costa Rica an ideal destination for international events.

Sustainability has always been a hallmark of Costa Rica. What initiatives stand out this year?

In November, we will host the Sustainable & Social Tourism Summit, which will be held outside of Mexico for the first time. This confirms that we don't just talk about sustainability; we live and demonstrate it. We are proud to welcome companies and organizations specializing in responsible tourism, as they will be able to see our sustainable practices in action in our daily tourism operations.

Which regions would you recommend to those who already know the country's most popular destinations?

There are two gems that are still largely unexplored but offer enormous potential. The first is the Los Santos region in the Central Valley, a coffee-growing region with extraordinary cultural and scenic richness, ideal for those seeking authentic experiences with the local community.

The second is the South Pacific, especially the Osa Peninsula and the Diquís Valley. This region is home to unique biodiversity and boasts boutique hotels offering first-class service. While hotel development is still expanding, this is the ideal time to discover it.

Finally, how would you define Costa Rica's current status as a tourist destination?

We are experiencing a time of consolidation and growth. Our commitment to sustainability, product innovation, and regional development allow us to offer a differentiated, safe, and transformative experience. Costa Rica is ready to continue leading the way as a responsible tourism destination in Latin America.
