Baja California, April 30, 2025. As part of the 2025 Tourism Fair, the Baja California State Tourism Secretariat and the Helvex Foundation presented the tenth edition of the Hotel Hidro Sustentable Distinction to representatives of the national tourism industry. This initiative promotes best practices in water conservation and efficient use within the hotel sector.

This joint effort reaffirms the Baja California government's commitment to Governor Marina del Pilar Ávila Olmeda's vision of the Human Right to Water, by encouraging the tourism industry to join in building a more sustainable, resilient, and environmentally responsible model.

Regarding this, Baja California's Secretary of Tourism, Miguel Aguíñiga Rodríguez, commented: “In Baja California, we promote a responsible tourism model that prioritizes well-being and sustainability, placing the responsible use of resources at its center. The Hotel Hidro Sustentable Distinction invites hotels in our state to take concrete actions to conserve water. This initiative strengthens the state government's commitment to protecting the human right to water and reinforces our vision of balanced tourism development .”

Since its creation in 2011, the Sustainable Hydro Hotel Distinction has saved 419 million liters and has been a fundamental tool for professionalizing and transforming hotel operations across the country. Over its nine previous editions, it has trained more than 600 establishments in 31 states, enabling a reduction in water consumption of up to 30 percent and generating cumulative savings of approximately 60 million liters and more than 30 million pesos.

During her participation, Alma Meneses, General Manager of the Helvex Foundation, said: " At the Helvex Foundation, we are convinced that responsible water management is key to the future of tourism in Mexico. The Hotel Hidro Sustentable Distinction not only recognizes hotels that are already doing things right, but also inspires the entire industry to take an active role in the care and efficient use of water. We are excited to present this tenth edition in Baja California, a state that has demonstrated leadership in water policies, and to join the commitment to guarantee the Human Right to Water with concrete and measurable actions ."

In the previous edition, 172 hotels were recognized for implementing actions such as installing rainwater harvesting systems, using industrial water for irrigation, preventive maintenance, and energy-saving technologies. These initiatives resulted in savings of more than 19.6 million liters of water in 2024, enough to supply a community of more than 190,000 people.
