What is the importance for Uruguay of participating in IMEX Frankfurt?

It's a key trade show for positioning the country as a MICE destination. Uruguay is a small destination in South America, but with significant qualities that we want to showcase to the world. IMEX gives us an international spotlight to highlight our ability to host conferences and events, and also to promote the country as a complementary tourist destination in the region.

What strengths does Uruguay offer as a destination for international events?

We have a strategic location between Brazil and Argentina, making it easy to combine regional visits. Furthermore, Uruguay is known for its economic, political, and social stability, a highly valued asset for event planning. Our democracy is solid, which instills trust in our visitors.

What other distinguishing features does Uruguay offer to visitors?

Safety, tranquility, and Uruguayan hospitality. We have a rich history and cultural heritage—such as Colonia del Sacramento, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site—as well as natural destinations like Rocha. The hotel infrastructure is top-notch, and our airports are internationally recognized for their design and efficiency.

How is European tourism positioned within Uruguay's strategy?

European tourists value authentic experiences. Uruguay offers just that: experiencing the local identity. From sharing a mate or a fried cake, to touring vineyards, having a barbecue, whale watching, or exploring amethyst stones on a mining safari. It's experiential, safe, and warm. Feel at home, but in Uruguay.

What is the Ministry's role in these international events?

We support the private sector through government, strengthening participation and generating institutional support. As Undersecretary, I participate alongside advisors and officials from the Ministry, as well as representatives from convention centers and incentive travel operators. It's a joint public-private partnership, which we greatly value.

What specific infrastructure does Uruguay have for the MICE segment?

Montevideo is the most established hub, with hotels ranging from small meeting rooms to venues for 600, 1,000, or 2,000 people. The airport is very close to the city center, which facilitates logistics. Punta del Este is also located, with an excellent selection of hotels, a convention center with capacity for more than 6,000 people, and renowned cuisine.

Colonia del Sacramento, just an hour by ferry from Buenos Aires, is also an excellent option. Beyond large events, Uruguay is ideal for small groups and incentive experiences, with iconic locations and authentic offerings.
