Coinciding with World Environment Day, Meliá Hotels International has announced significant progress in its commitment to sustainability: 4,000 events held at the company's 40 most strategic Meetings & Events hotels have achieved carbon neutrality by 2024, thanks to the offsetting of a total of 5,387 tons of CO₂, carried out as part of its Road to Net Zero Events program.

This initiative reinforces Meliá's determination to move toward a positive impact tourism, supported by innovation, efficiency, and raising awareness among its stakeholders about responsible decision-making.

Road to Net Zero Events is a response to Meliá's commitment to raising awareness among its guests about the environmental impact of its events. Through this program, the company measures the carbon footprint generated by accommodations, meeting room use, and food and beverage services contracted for events held at these 40 flagship MICE hotels.

Thanks to its collaboration with Creast, Meliá has developed its own carbon footprint measurement technology, which allows it to calculate the environmental impact of each event at two key moments: during the quote itself and at the end of the event, enabling its guests to make more informed and responsible decisions.

Of the 4,000 events held at these hotels since the Road to Net Zero Events project was launched, more than 1,300 tons of CO₂ were avoided thanks to the use of renewable energy (at those establishments that use this energy source). The remaining footprint was offset by the purchase of carbon credits through the Climatetrade platform, intended to finance a clean energy project in the Dominican Republic, one of the company's most important destinations in the group and conference segment.

Additionally, and as part of its global commitment to decarbonization, Meliá Hotels International has offset the entire carbon footprint generated in 2024 by the Palau de Congressos de Palma and its adjacent hotel, Meliá Palma Bay, covering not only the emissions associated with the events held, but also all emissions from the entire venue. This action makes it a carbon-neutral congress center (Scope 1 and 2), reaffirming Meliá's leadership in sustainability applied to large infrastructures and key destinations within the MICE segment.

“At Meliá, we believe that tourism should be a positive force for the communities and destinations where we operate. Under our Travel for Good framework program, we promote concrete actions such as Road to Net Zero Events: a tool to engage our guests in more responsible decision-making, together promoting a more conscious and sustainable events industry,” said Gabriel Escarrer, President and CEO of Meliá Hotels International.
