Santiago, June 5, 2025.- June 20 is National Indigenous Peoples' Day, a Friday holiday that invites people to cross the Andes to the neighboring country, given the proximity of the destination.
For those nationals considering this idea, there's something they should keep in mind from now on. Through a statement issued by President Javier Milei's office, Decree 366/2025 was implemented, making medical coverage mandatory for non-resident foreigners.
Who is it aimed at?
To non-resident foreigners, that is, those who do not have permanent residence in Argentina, and to those who enter the country for tourism, temporary work, studies, or other temporary reasons.
What type of coverage is required?
Comprehensive medical coverage, including treatment for illnesses, accidents, and medical repatriation, is valid throughout your stay.
Who is exempt?
Permanent residents and medical emergencies, where immediate care is guaranteed regardless of immigration status. Given this context, Assist Card, a leading travel assistance company, designed a product for this occasion called "Classic Argentina," to be used only within Argentina, with a 50% discount. It will have the unique feature of having a minimum issuance period of 3 days and a maximum of 30 days, and a maximum global amount of USD 60,000.
This decision by the Argentine government is crucial for Chilean travelers, who typically rank the Andean territory as their second-most-liked air destination, surpassed only by Brazil during the 2025 peak season.
In fact, in the first three months of this year, 308,834 compatriots crossed the Andes by air, according to statistics from the Civil Aeronautics Board, with Buenos Aires being the most popular destination, followed by Mendoza.
These figures coincide with those of Assist Card, a comprehensive travel assistance company. According to its figures, 10.4% of its clients' quotes are for trips to Argentina, a significant percentage considering that many people rely on the proximity.
"With this new Argentine regulation, we want to continue supporting travelers. Therefore, given the new mandatory travel restrictions, we offer a product at a preferential price so that everyone can continue traveling to the neighboring country, complying with entry regulations and protected by travel assistance capable of handling any situation," says Daniel Escolá, Country Manager of Assist Card Chile.
