For the fifth consecutive year, Avianca has been recognized by the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), a leading global organization in assessing corporate environmental impact. The airline received a "B" rating, one of the highest in the region, in recognition of its proactive management of climate change and its transparent approach to communicating environmental progress.
During 2024, Avianca achieved a 7% reduction in absolute emissions from its passenger and cargo operations compared to 2019. This progress was achieved despite a 24% increase in passenger traffic, demonstrating improvements in operational efficiency. The airline also reduced its emissions intensity per passenger transported, measured in Revenue Passenger Kilometers (RPKs), by 20%.
One of the pillars of this improvement has been the modernization of its fleet. Currently, more than 40 A320neo aircraft, which the manufacturer claims consume up to 20% less fuel, are in operation, along with a dedicated A330F freighter aircraft. Furthermore, between 2019 and 2024, Avianca offset more than 3.1 million metric tons of CO₂ and promoted customer participation in voluntary emissions offsetting, achieving a 323% increase compared to 2022.
Responsible waste management has also been a priority. Between 2019 and 2024, conventional waste generation at the main operating stations was reduced by 27%, driven by fleet standardization and adjustments to onboard service models and lounges. In parallel, the recycling rate increased from 43% to 49%, as a result of strategic partnerships aimed at promoting a circular economy.
In the area of environmental protection, Avianca has led various initiatives alongside organizations such as Ecoventura, Fundación Hábitat Sur, and Deprisa, facilitating the transfer of 19 tons of waste from the Galapagos Islands to Quito and 3 tons from Leticia to Bogotá between 2022 and 2024. More recently, an agreement was signed with Deprisa, Fondo Acción, and the Miss Raxi and Mis Graci Foundation, which will allow the monthly transport of up to 3 tons of waste from San Andrés and Providencia to the Colombian capital, with the aim of reducing the environmental impact on fragile ecosystems and supporting job inclusion projects for recyclers.
Felipe Andrés Gómez Vivas, Vice President of Corporate Affairs and Sustainability at Avianca, emphasized that the continued achievement of this rating represents recognition of the company's sustainable strategy. "This achievement confirms that the progress made is moving in the right direction. We recognize the industry's environmental challenges and remain committed to an efficient and inclusive operation," he stated.
With this new rating, Avianca consolidates its efficient business model, demonstrating that it is possible to fly more while reducing environmental impacts and generating concrete benefits for communities.
