The Mexican Government's Ministry of Tourism (Sectur) and Visa signed a collaboration agreement aimed at strengthening the country's promotion as an international tourist destination. The agreement is based on the use of aggregated data on foreign tourist spending, with the goal of improving the visitor experience and fostering greater economic growth through the digitalization of payments.

The voluntary, non-profit alliance represents a model of cooperation between the public and private sectors that seeks to capitalize on the strengths of both institutions to contribute to national tourism and economic development. Among the main pillars of the agreement is an analysis of the economic impact of international tourism at key moments, such as the 2026 FIFA World Cup™, of which Mexico will be one of the host countries.

The tournament, considered the largest in FIFA history, will feature 104 matches and 48 participating teams. Millions of people are expected to visit Mexico during the event, generating significant economic activity. In this context, Visa will provide the Ministry of Tourism with information derived from the analysis of digital transactions, allowing for a better understanding of visitor behavior and more efficient decision-making.

The head of the Ministry of Tourism (Sectur), Josefina Rodríguez Zamora, highlighted the importance of having accurate information for the design and implementation of public policies aimed at more competitive, inclusive, and sustainable tourism. She also emphasized that the World Cup represents a key opportunity to position Mexico on the global stage, and that the partnership with Visa will maximize the event's benefits in various destinations across the country.

From the private sector, Visa's general manager in Mexico, Francisco Valdivia, reaffirmed the company's commitment to strengthening economic opportunities through access to digital payments. In his words, "Tourism is a key sector, and the 2026 FIFA World Cup™ offers an ideal context to collaborate with Sectur (Security and Tourism) to expand the benefits of tourism through technological tools and data analysis."

The agreement represents a commitment to innovation and sustainability in tourism, with a long-term vision that transcends the sporting event. Both parties agreed that this type of initiative strengthens the country's institutional capacity to position itself as a world-class destination.
