Maido restaurant, led by chef Mitsuharu Tsumura (Micha), was crowned the world's best restaurant in the 2025 edition of the prestigious "The World's 50 Best Restaurants" ranking, held in Turin, Italy.
Founded in 2009 in Lima, Maido has established itself as an international benchmark for Nikkei cuisine, a refined fusion of Peruvian and Japanese culinary traditions. Chef Mitsuharu Tsumura, nicknamed "Micha," has spent over 15 years perfecting a unique culinary offering, celebrating the cultural fusion and Japanese-Peruvian roots through a technically precise menu and tasting menu, rich in flavors and emotions.
Deeply moved, the chef proudly accepted this distinction, at the height of an award-winning career. In 2024, Maido ranked fifth in the world. It had previously been named the best restaurant in Latin America in 2017, 2018, 2019, and 2023.
Peru confirms its position as a must-see culinary destination: three more Lima restaurants also appear in the 2025 World's 50 Best ranking: Kjolle (9th place), Mérito (26th), and Mayta (39th). Also noteworthy is the presence of chef Virgilio Martínez's MIL restaurant, located in Cusco, near the Moray archaeological site, which takes 75th place in the expanded ranking.
Maido is the second Peruvian restaurant to reach the top spot in the world ranking. In 2023, Central, also located in Lima and led by chef Virgilio Martínez, was awarded the title of best restaurant in the world.
This new distinction confirms the tremendous growth of Peruvian gastronomy, acclaimed year after year by international critics. Peru was named "World's Best Culinary Destination" for the twelfth time at the 2024 World Travel Awards, and Lima received the titles of "Best Culinary Destination in Latin America" and "Best Gastronomic City in Latin America" at the 2024 World Culinary Awards.
