The SAF Matchmaker addresses three critical issues:
Efficiency: The availability of a central platform will simplify the acquisition of SAF, facilitating and streamlining the connection between all parties without additional costs. This will therefore facilitate the development of the voluntary SAF acquisition market.
Connectivity: SAF producers and suppliers can publish available or planned volumes, while airlines can register their interest in purchasing the displayed or desired SAF volumes. Subsequent transactions will be conducted offline.
Visibility: The platform contains comprehensive information on available SAF, such as volumes, raw materials used, production location and technology, emissions reductions, and compliance with the Carbon Offsetting Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA) or the European Union's Renewable Energy Directive (EU RED).
To achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, we need an accessible, transparent, liquid, and efficient SAF market. SAF Matchmaker is another example of the work IATA is doing to create a fully operational marketplace for SAF. The SAF Matchmaker platform will accelerate SAF adoption by reducing the costs and complexity airlines face when searching for SAF suppliers, said Marie Owens Thomsen, IATA's Senior Vice President, Sustainability, and Chief Economist.
The SAF Matchmaker supports both spot purchases and purchase agreements and is initially available only to airlines and SAF suppliers. Other SAF buyers, such as non-aerospace companies, will soon be eligible to participate.
SAF Matchmaker is hosted on the Aviation Energy Hub, a centralized digital space designed to provide the aviation industry with access to practical tools that support aviation energy management.
