Tourism Minister Pablo Menoni stated, “It is an honor for us to be able to sign an agreement with you, and we are obsessed with governing based on the data that evidence provides. We have a very pronounced deficiency in data management. Therefore, the Montevideo University Group gives us a very broad spectrum to work with the best professionals and academics in the field, especially in econometrics.”
He also mentioned the expectations of this agreement: "The expectation is to be able to work as soon as possible, to meet with the professors who will be working there. We want to be certain about the determinants of demand, particularly the return on promotional expenses, but also how the exchange rate and growth variables impact tourists' decisions when choosing Uruguay."
Tourism is a human right and constitutes a fundamental strategic sector for economic, social, cultural, and environmental development, with significant potential for generating employment, foreign exchange, quality services, and improving the lives of citizens.
The justification for this agreement is based on the fact that the Ministry of Tourism's primary responsibilities include the development, direction, implementation, and oversight of national tourism policy, as well as the promotion and fostering of sustainable tourism development in the country. Furthermore, the AUGM brings together prestigious public universities in the region, committed to academic excellence, scientific research, technological innovation, and university outreach. These universities possess expertise and experience in various areas related to the tourism sector and its cross-cutting nature, such as tourism management, economics, territorial planning, culture, and communication, among others.
The agreement also establishes specific areas of collaboration: research applied to tourism, human resource development and development, innovation and technological development in tourism, and academic and professional exchange. It also includes technical assistance and consulting, joint event organization, publications and knowledge dissemination, promotion of tourism culture and entrepreneurship, and sustainable and responsible tourism.
