Air traffic is an indicator that analyzes the dynamics of tourism and a country's economic development, as well as the perception and level of competitiveness of destinations. Therefore, a decrease in passenger traffic on domestic flights can be a key point of attention when assessing any actions that may be impacting this situation.

Between January and April 2025, 18,223,195 passengers passed through the country's airports, 3.7% higher than the same period in 2024. However, this growth was driven by international traffic, which showed a 9.2% increase compared to the first four months of 2024, as national performance is already showing.

In the case of domestic air traffic, it accounted for 58.8% of total passengers, with a volume of 10,319,649, a decrease of 0.1% compared to the same months in 2024.

"This trend may be related to factors such as the increase in inflation that occurred between January and April of this year, compared to the same period in 2024, in the areas of fuel, passenger transportation, and air baggage, among others," explained Paula Cortés Calle, executive president of ANATO.

She added: “But there is also an effect that may be impacting passenger air traffic rates on domestic flights: the country's security. This is generating fear of travel, limiting leisure trips, as well as trips related to events and business, and canceling routes and frequencies to some destinations. Therefore, we require concrete actions to guarantee the safety of tourists, as good air traffic is a fundamental tool for building a competitive, inclusive, and sustainable industry,” the union leader concluded.
