RIU Hotels & Resorts , as part of its Proudly Committed sustainability strategy , has signed an agreement with TIRME, the Environmental Technology Park of Mallorca, to guarantee the supply of 100% renewable, locally generated electricity to all its establishments in the Balearic Islands.
The agreement, valid for 2025, 2026, and 2027, ensures that the electricity consumed by RIU at its facilities in the Balearic Islands will have a zero carbon footprint starting this year.
This pioneering commitment in the hospitality industry makes RIU Hotels the first hotel chain to sign an agreement of this nature with TIRME, guaranteeing that its entire electricity supply will come exclusively from renewable sources generated in the autonomous community. This agreement will supply RIU's five hotels in Mallorca, its establishment in Formentera, and its corporate offices located in Playa de Palma.
This is a step that reinforces the Mallorcan chain's track record in green energy, as since 2022, RIU has been supplying certified renewable electricity in twelve countries, more than half of the destinations where it operates.
This action, as well as the installation of photovoltaic solar panels in 22 of its hotels, is aligned with RIU's overall objective of reducing its carbon footprint, which has yielded notable results over the last three years, with emissions per stay (scopes 1 and 2) falling by 64%. This represents a significant achievement of its Proudly Committed sustainability strategy.
