PROMPERÚ, an entity attached to the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism, presented the Foreign Tourist Profile, an intelligence study that captures the choices, decisions, activities, and behaviors that characterize foreign visitors arriving in Peru.
The study was developed to provide industry players with key information that will enable them to enhance their commercial strategies based on changes and trends in travel habits.
Among the main findings of the study, we have that the majority of foreign tourists who travel to Peru decide on activities related to cultural tourism (98%) and gastronomic practices (98%).
On the other hand, nature (67%) and adventure (61%) activities grew by more than 15 percentage points since 2019, indicating that Peru is being seen as a destination that offers new experiences to its visitors.
Furthermore, foreign tourists plan their visit to Peru carefully, with 55% booking their trip between one and four months in advance; 19% even book between five and eight months in advance. Furthermore, 86% travel only to visit Peru and no other destination.
This desire to make the most of their experience in our country is reflected in the fact that 46% of travelers purchase a tour package. Of these, 35% do so online, while 32% use a physical travel agency.
Foreign tourists are increasingly digital; for example, in 2019, 77% purchased their airline tickets online, a figure that will rise to 92% in 2024. However, the most notable change is observed in accommodation bookings, which increased from 25% (2019) to 69% in 2024.
The study was conducted with a sample of more than 5,000 foreign tourists who entered Peru through Jorge Chávez International Airport during 2024.
