Global Work & Travel published a study that exposes the contrasting costs of emergency medical transportation around the world. For tourists, ignorance about these costs can translate into unexpected bills that far exceed their vacation budget.

“Most travelers assume emergency care is free until they receive the bill,” says Jessie Chambers, travel expert at Global Work & Travel. “Ambulance costs vary dramatically between countries and are often not covered by basic insurance.”

From free transportation to luxury fares
Among the most expensive cases is the United States, where a transfer can cost between USD 950 and USD 1,300 by land, and more than USD 10,000 by air. Australia shows variable figures by state, ranging from USD 430 to more than USD 1,300, while in Canada, costs range from USD 230 to USD 470.

In contrast, the United Kingdom, France, New Zealand, Japan, and Spain offer free or minimal-fee services to tourists in emergencies. However, in destinations such as Mexico, Thailand, the United Arab Emirates, and South Africa, using private services can cost from USD 60 to over USD 380, depending on the provider, the distance, and the severity of the case.

Key tips to avoid overpaying
Experts recommend that tourists take precautions before leaving on their trip:

Save the local emergency number on your cell phone before traveling.

Make sure your insurance covers medical transportation, both land and air.

Request the use of public services, which are usually cheaper or even free.

Avoid assumptions: In many countries, even the public system can bill non-residents.

Bring translation apps and offline maps, especially in destinations where language may be a barrier.

Being informed about these costs can avoid financial surprises at critical times. A medical transfer can be the difference between a well-resolved emergency... or unexpected debt upon returning home.
