More than 75% of travelers experience travel mishaps, most do not hire insurance
November 15, 2018

The data comes from a study conducted by travel insurance comparison site TravelInsurance.com

A new survey by TravelInsurance.com travel insurance comparison site found that even though travelers are worried about trip interruptions and many have experienced setbacks while on vacation, less than half of respondents have purchased travel insurance. Of those who did not buy travel insurance, only a third considered it.

"The survey results show a clear disconnect: respondents have real concerns about travel interruptions and have experienced them first-hand, but they do not consider the many benefits of travel insurance," said Stan Sandberg, co-founder of TravelInsurance.com . "Our survey revealed that the most common reasons travelers ignore travel insurance are: they think it's too expensive, they do not understand the coverage or the rules of purchase, and they think they just do not need it. By purchasing travel insurance, and offering travel consumers a transparent insight into the value proposition of travel insurance, TravelInsurance.com is helping educate travel consumers to buy and buy with confidence. "

The survey asked more than 1,000 people who travel several times a year about their travel pleasure habits in 2018, along with the concerns they have when booking their vacations. Below are some key results.

Travel expenses
The survey found that more than one in five (22%) will spend more than $ 5,000 on travel this year, with almost half (47%) spending more than $ 2,500. Older travelers tend to spend more since they usually have higher disposable income, make longer trips and spend more on vacation trips than their younger counterparts.

Travel worries
According to the survey, the three main travel concerns for travelers were interruptions related to weather, the possibility of an illness or injury affecting a trip and terrorism. These concerns are also the main risks addressed by most travel insurance plans.
The survey deepened travelers' concerns about the weather. More than three quarters of respondents (78%) indicated that they are at least thinking about the weather at their destination when booking a trip. However, more than half (52%) said that they rarely or never take into consideration the climate in their city of departure when booking a trip.
Travel insurance with travel cancellation coverage is one of the most effective ways to protect an investment in non-reimbursable vacations throughout the year, but it can be especially important during the increasingly active hurricane season and during the winter months , when storms are more likely. Both coincide with some of the busiest pleasure travel months of the year.

Trip interruptions
While many vacations go smoothly, the results of the survey point to rampant delays. Three out of four respondents (76%) have suffered a flight delay in the past, and almost half (48%) have lost or stolen their luggage. Another third (35%) have experienced illness or travel with someone who became ill during a trip.
