According to Sectur, the new Mazatlan aquarium will be vital to attract more tourists
The Secretary of Tourism of Mexico Miguel Torruco Marqués considered that it will be the "attractive anchor" that Mazatlan needs to increase the influx of visitors
The Secretary of Tourism of Mexico, Miguel Torruco Marqués, and the governor of Sinaloa, Quirino Ordaz Coppel, laid the first stone of what will be the new "Aquarium of the Sea of Cortez", which will become the best not only of the country, but of Latin America, project in which 1,400 million pesos will be invested in its construction, maintenance and operation.
In his message, Miguel Torruco stressed that this new aquarium, which will replace the Mazatlan Aquarium, which dates back 40 years, will be a trigger for the arrival of more tourists and the attractive anchor that this destination needs to increase the influx of visitors, both national and foreign.
He mentioned that this project is in tune with the policy undertaken by the President of the Republic, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, consisting of creating tourist attractions "anchor" in each of the states to increase tourism.
He emphasized that Mexico is currently ranked 15th in the world in terms of attracting foreign currency and 40 in per capita spending, despite the fact that in the past six years, 24 billion pesos were invested in promotion, through the Tourism Promotion Council of Mexico (CPTM), an organization that, he said, has already completed its cycle.
He made it clear that "to face this challenge it is necessary to extend the stay of our tourists, offering more and better tourism products, according to the expectations and requirements of an increasingly demanding traveler, who seeks more attractive novelties and not remain captive in a only place, away from the natural beauties, the culture and tradition of the visited destination ".
In this sense, Miguel Torruco invited hotel entrepreneurs to "start a process of transformation in which tourists are encouraged to know the attractions of the destination and, thus, increase the economic spill generated by its consumption in restaurants, shops crafts, markets, bars and nightclubs, among others, with what is favored development.
The owner of the Sectur showed his confidence that when the aquarium comes into operation, Mazatlán will improve its tourism statistics, since it currently occupies the eighth place in terms of visiting foreign tourists and annually receives 2 million 600 thousand visitors in total, with an economic spill of four thousand million pesos.
Regarding the cruisers, Miguel Torruco reported that Mazatlán occupies the fourth place in the Pacific area, with the arrival of 92 cruisers that transported 260,000 cruise passengers.
For his part, Governor Ordaz Coppel said that no aquarium in Mexico has recorded this investment, a total of 1,400 million pesos, a project that will form part of the Central Park currently under construction, to offer visitors a whole set of new attractions in this same area of the port, like the remodeled baseball stadium "Teodoro Mariscal", the new pier and the recovery of the Laguna del Camarón, which was converted into an unhealthy marsh.
"Undoubtedly, this will be the work of greater tourist significance, the greatest attraction that will have not only Mazatlan, but the south of Sinaloa and the region, because the great beach for Durango and the lagoon region, the tourist destination of all that zone is Mazatlan. "
Ordaz Coppel said that building an aquarium of this magnitude is to think big, because it will have a construction surface of 12 thousand square meters in two levels of marine and avian species exhibition, a third level for the contemplation of the lagoon and the park itself , while the different tanks will house 4.6 million liters of water, which means that it will be 2.5 times larger than the current Mazatlan Aquarium.
He added that, in addition to registering a large investment, it will be a social project, since it will generate hundreds of jobs; but, in addition, it will promote the education of the children, because at the request of the municipal president of Mazatlan, Luis Guillermo Benítez Torres, 800 courtesies will be provided so that the students can attend the educational areas, such as the research laboratory and the areas where exhibits the reproduction of natural habitats.
"It is not only to see the fish, it is to see where they come from, the care for the environment and the protection of nature, which will remain present in the minds of the children who will visit this aquarium," added the governor of Sinaloa.
