For the third consecutive year, these inspiring talks reach Latin America
Marriott Hotels, in partnership with TED, provide for the third consecutive year new sustainability ideas for travelers from Latin America with the TED x Marriott event. This year, Costa Rica Marriott Hotel San José has the opportunity to host this event, where two TED Fellows will share their ideas and experiences about the power of sustainability. Marriott International is encouraged to participate in this project because of its commitment to sustainable development.
The TED Fellows' talks have been held in the main cities of Marriott Hotels worldwide, such as Santiago, Chile, Mexico City, Bogotá and Medellín, Colombia. The event in Costa Rica will be the first event hosted in Central America.
The event has two TED Fellows who are experts in the world of sustainability. The first of the TED Fellows to be presented is Skylar Tibbits, an architect, designer and computer scientist whose research focuses on the development of self-assembly technologies for large-scale structures in our environment. While Kotchakorn Voraakhom, architect focused on garden design, whose main focus is the construction of ecological public spaces that face climate change in the sinking cities.
"Our successful partnership with TED continues through Latin America, this year in Costa Rica with the theme of sustainability. As one of the leaders of sustainability in the hotel industry, it is our duty to account for our environmental footprint and be part of the solution, "said Diana Plazas, vice president of brand, marketing and digital for Marriott International, Caribbean and Latin America. "For more than 90 years, we have put people first and we are always looking for ways to share our environmental vision with our guests. We hope to continue offering moments of inspiration, so that they continue to discover new points of view while traveling, "he concluded.
The inspiring stories of the TED Fellows will catch everyone. Such is the case of Kotchakorn Voraakhom, who never thought that his childhood pastimes, like paddling a boat with friends in the flood in front of his house, would show him a challenging reality: a city sinking. To help save his hometown of Bangkok from rising sea levels and climate change, Voraakhom founded the landscape architectural design company Landprocess. This is where your challenging and interesting life experience begins.
On the other hand, Skylar created in 2007 SJET LLC, a platform of experimental computing and design, which has become a multidisciplinary practice based on research which crosses disciplines from architecture + design, manufacturing, computer science, to robotics.
This Marriott International and TED event will enrich the hotel experience, as well as the guests, and reaffirm the commitment to sustainability. As a global initiative, 100% of Marriott International's hotels will have sustainability certification and 650 hotels will seek LEED certification or its equivalent by 2025.
