Yucatan begins expansion and remodeling of the XXI Century Convention Center
In the process of receiving the Tourism Tianguis 2020, they began the remodeling of the convention center that will make it a reference in the segment of meetings tourism nationwide
On July 24, 2019, with the presence of the governor of Yucatan, Mauricio Vila Dosal, the expansion and remodeling of the Yucatan Century XXI Convention Center, a project that, with an investment of 220 million pesos, represents One of the first actions to receive in Mérida, thanks to the management carried out by the Ministry of Tourism Promotion of the State (Sefotur), headed by Ms. Michelle Fridman Hirsch, the Tourism Tianguis in its 45th edition for March 2020, event that which will boost Yucatan to position itself as a reference for meetings, congresses and conventions in the country.
On the outside of this property, Vila Dosal made the flag that began these works that include the extension of the exhibition area, which will go from 13,000 square meters (m2) to 23,000 m2 and the remodeling and adaptation of existing facilities, with which the state will be placed among the seven most important to host events of great magnitude nationwide.
For its part, the head of Sefotur, Fridman Hirsch commented, “Today we give the starting flag for the expansion of the Yucatán Siglo XXI exhibition center, where we will receive the 45th edition of Tianguis Turístico in March 2020. With this we intend to reinforce the Yucatan meetings tourism structure and thus attract and create great events and exhibitions. This will place us within the ten cities in Mexico with venues capable of receiving large-scale events, which will be reflected in benefits for the destination. ”
In this regard, the national president of the Mexican Association of Professionals of Fairs, Exhibitions, Congresses and Conventions (Amprofec), Gonzalo Novelo Luján, celebrated the decision of the State Government to continue positioning Yucatan in this segment of tourism, in which he has been growing nationwide, given that the state has a vocation to stand out in this sector.
The leader said that with the expansion of the 21st Century Yucatan Convention Center, this venue is ranked as the ninth largest in Mexico and adding its area to that of the International Congress Center (CIC), the seventh site in specialized spaces would be reached for the organization of this type of events, privileged position in the national tourism ecosystem of meetings of the country.
In his message, Vila Dosal stressed that this improvement plan is designed to make the Convention Center a benchmark in the country with a 25-year vision, showing that Yucatan has everything to offer quality venues, with infrastructure conditions and human capital to make great meetings.
“Having a convention center today, as it will be, of 23,000 square meters, will make us level up, since only Mexico City, Guadalajara, Monterrey, Puebla, Guanajuato, Acapulco and Chihuahua have it. So when big events come nationally and internationally, the list of cities with which we will compete will be increasingly smaller, ”added the Governor.
The works that began this day will be in charge of the Yucatecan company Constructora Proser and consist of the redesign on the south facade of the XXI Century Convention Center, inspired by the Uxmal Governor's Palace, as well as the creation of corridors and common areas with shade natural and artificial for the benefit of both attendees and passersby.
Similarly, it considers the expansion of the exhibition area to reach 11,002 square meters (m2), the bath modules up to 689 m2, the loading and unloading hall will increase its operating capacity to 634 m2, the maneuvering yard will be it will expand to reach 3,246 m2 and the floor level parking will have a new dimension of 11,800 m2.
As part of this project, the infrastructure of the Chichén Itzá and Uxmal rooms, all the bathroom modules, both of the rooms and the staff, will also be renewed; the kitchens, warehouses, the loading and unloading area, the corridors of services and exhibitions, the facilities of the XXI Century Cinemas, as well as the offices of the Board of Trustees of the Cultural and Tourist Units of the State (Cultur) and the Sefotur. The works are estimated to be completed by the end of this year
