Economic spill generated by MICE represents 1.8% of GDP in Mexico

The Ministry of Tourism will promote, promote and strengthen the Meetings Industry, since it represents an annual spill of 35 billion dollars in the country


The Secretary of Tourism of the Government of Mexico, Miguel Torruco Marqués, inaugurated in Los Cabos the XXVI National Congress of the Industry of Meetings.
He informed that this segment means an annual expenditure of 35 billion dollars in our country.
In addition, it occupies 30 million room-nights a year, almost a fifth of those employed throughout the territory.
The Ministry of Tourism will promote, promote and strengthen the Industry of Meetings, since it represents an annual spill of 35 billion dollars in the country, equivalent to 1.8 percent of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), said the head of this agency Miguel Torruco Marquis.
He said that this segment generates around 900 thousand jobs and occupies 30 million night rooms per year, equivalent to 18.8 percent of the night rooms occupied in the country.
Opening this afternoon the XXVI National Congress of the Meeting Industry (CNIR), in Los Cabos, Baja California Sur, the official said that the Meeting Industry represents 3.1 times the GDP generated by the total sum of what concerts produce, shows, amateur and professional sporting events, and all recreational activities of the republic.
He also made it clear that the traveler in this area usually has a higher budget than a vacation tourist and spends 94 percent more than this.
Another interesting fact that he gave is that of the food and beverages consumed by tourists in Mexico, a quarter corresponds to those attending meetings.
“However, the impact of the meetings not only occurs in economic and short-term aspects, filling rooms and restaurants, but also helping to improve in the long term the quality of life of local communities, importing knowledge, incorporating programs of social responsibility and detonating investments, which fits directly with the current vision of the tourism government, conceived as a tool for social reconciliation; that is, that the benefits of this activity permeate the local population, ”explained Torruco Marqués.
With the presence of the governor of Baja California Sur, Carlos Mendoza Davis, and the president of the Mexican Council of the Meeting Industry (Comir), the head of Sectur indicated that today, according to the criteria of the ICCA (International Congress and Convention Association), there are more than 12 thousand 900 events that rotate across all continents, an amount that doubles every 10 years. In the fight for this market, the United States occupies the first place, with 947 congresses; followed by Germany, with 642 and Spain, with 595; while Mexico is at site 22, when reporting 172 congresses.
In the Americas, the United States is the leader, Canada is in second place with 315 events, Brazil is third with 233, Argentina fourth with 232 and Mexico, with 172 congresses, occupies the fifth place at the continental level.
The secretary of tourism of Mexico said that ours is a highly competitive country worldwide in the Meetings Tourism Industry, because we have a wide and growing infrastructure of tourist services for congresses, incentive trips, conferences, meetings and exhibitions, in addition to excellent service quality.
However, this preference for our destinations is also strongly motivated by the natural, cultural, and gastronomic richness of Mexico. Hence, during the first half of this year in total, 22.1 million international tourists arrived in the country, 7 percent more than what was recorded in the same period last year, with an economic spill of 11 thousand 915 million dollars, 13.9 per one hundred higher than the previous year.
Likewise, the average expenditure of tourists who arrived both by air and land, reached $ 927.8, 12.3 percent more than in 2018. In addition, in the period mentioned the number of direct jobs in the tourism sector of Mexico was 4 million 308 thousand, 4.3 percent more than the same period last year. This increase was higher than the 2.3 percent achieved nationwide.
“Without a doubt, these are encouraging figures that we will have to improve month after month and year after year. That is my commitment, as well as working with you to position Mexico among the main receivers of Reunion Tourism worldwide, ”Miguel Torruco said.
