Within the framework of the Climate and Environmental Action Forum 2019, held in this city, Gloria Guevara Manzo, President and CEO of the WTTC, said that the goal of the agency is that the tourism industry is free of emissions by 2050 and that for this A program will be established with the purpose of promoting the decarbonization of the Travel and Tourism industry worldwide.
The UN and the WTTC plan includes, among other initiatives: identifying and implementing new sustainability strategies and innovative business models; align sustainable development efforts with the goals of the UN; prioritize sustainability by establishing specific deadlines; collaborate and share data and best practices to develop sustainability, in addition to producing an annual action report, which articulates and shows the tangible movement towards the environmentally friendly journey.
“We will work to support measures of energy efficiency, renewable energy and waste reduction, both within companies throughout the value chain. In addition, together with governments we will develop incentives for WTTC members to invest in nature-based solutions, ”said Guevara Manzo.
The UN program and the WTTC also include the development and exchange of research and evidence on how Travel and Tourism companies can reduce carbon dioxide emissions and invest in schemes to reduce pollution through the Framework Convention on United Nations on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
Through the Travel and Tourism sustainability partners, the WTTC will invite all companies, large and small, to enroll in the program, in order to be recognized for their commitments in the sustainability of the sector.
“The WTTC will launch a Travel and Sustainable Tourism Hub that will boost our research, exchange of best practices and foster collaboration with key partners, including the UNFCCC and the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP), to find solutions that are applicable to the entire sector, ”said Guevara Manzo.
The WTTC calls on all Travel and Tourism leaders to support the Sustainability Action Plan (0SCARS), in order to preserve the environment and move towards a sector with zero CO2 emissions by 2050.
