Hotel occupancy in Colombia continues to rise

According to the hotel indicators report issued by Cotelco, hotel occupancy in Colombia increased by 2.4 percentage points in the month of August 2019. With this result, at the end of the reference month, the occupancy level reached 60.22% and The accumulated January to August reaches 55.79%, one percentage point more than what had been registered in this same period of 2018.
For Gustavo Adolfo Toro Velásquez, national executive president of Cotelco, “the tourism and hotel sector in Colombia continues to grow, thanks to the increase in the number of international tourists arriving in our country and the recovery of domestic tourism, driven mainly by the different festivities and events developed at the regional level and for a good performance of the corporate segment ”.
San Andrés remains in the first place of hotel occupancy with a level of 78.12% and a growth of 0.12 percentage points. The archipelago presented an increase of 8 percentage points in the proportion of national tourists who stayed at the destination, reflecting the impact of domestic tourism on this important destination.
The Heroic Cartagena de Indias was in second place in the ranking of occupation, with a percentage of 70.22% but a decrease of 1.74 percentage points. On the other hand, in the third place was Antioquia, with an occupation of 69.18% and a decrease of 1.52 percentage points.
Bogotá D.C managed to position itself in fourth place in terms of occupation, reaching 63.15% and a growth of 2.94 percentage points. The capital of the Republic remains strong in the corporate segment, but also increases by 2 percentage points in the ratio of foreigners who spend the night in the city.
Atlántico was another destination that presented a very important growth in the reference month, closing at 60.96%, which translates into a growth of 6.94%, driven by the corporate segment, the same trend observed in Valle del Cauca that closed by 58.16% and increased by 6.89 percentage points.
Tolima and Alto Magdalena also showed favorable behavior, thanks to the Ibagué Festival, reaching 56.25% of occupied rooms and a growth of 5.36 percentage points. In turn, Barrancabermeja and Norte de Santander continue to recover and grow by 18.64 and 6.69 percentage points, respectively.
Other destinations with increased occupancy in the period were: Nariño (+7.59 p.p.), Santander (+7.56 p.p.), Casanare (+6.93 p.p.), Risaralda (+1.82 p.p.), Cesar (+1.49 p.p.). Despite the good performance in the national consolidation, some destinations fall in its occupancy indicator: Caldas (-15.89 pp), Huila (-3.88 pp), Meta (-2.31 pp), Quindío (-1.78 pp), Magdalena (- 1.48 pp) and Boyacá (-1.04 pp).
With respect to other performance indicators, the report published by Cotelco reports that the average real rate increased by 1.3%. On the other hand, with the highest occupancy achieved, the real income of the hotels increased by 6.8% in the reference month, in the same way, the profitability of the sector measured through the RevPar increased by 6.4%.
