Colombia diversifies its tourist offer for foreign visitors
According to ANATO, Tunja, Leticia, Armenia and Popayán are the fastest growing destinations in inbound tourism
Colombia is a diverse country that offers a variety of activities and ideal plans to attract any national and international tourist. Although sun and beach destinations are characterized by being the most requested, there are cities that in recent times show a considerable growth in the number of people who are interested in visiting them.
According to ANATO calculations, based on data from Migration Colombia, the city with the highest increase in foreign tourists has reported between January and September 2019 is Tunja, with an increase of 31%, when compared to the same period of 2018. It is the capital of Boyacá, which has preserved its monumental buildings so as not to lose its identity and soul, and the perfect setting for those who enjoy bird watching and hiking along forests of high Andean landscape.
Another city that has shown growth is Leticia, with 14%. The capital of the Amazon has approximately 42,000 inhabitants and is a place to get close to nature, take long river tours and learn about indigenous traditions and their crafts.
For its part, Armenia, with an increase of 11%, has been established as a starting point to visit attractions such as Salento, the oldest municipality in Quindío, and the National Park of the Agricultural Culture-Panaca.
Finally, Popayán, known as the white city, which with a growth of 10%, has been gaining recognition among Colombian visitors abroad, not only for its religious traditions, but for being classified as an entrance to tourist sites such as the National Archaeological Park of Tierradentro and other areas of the country such as San Agustín (Huila).
It should be noted that Medellín, which is among the cities with the highest number of visitors, with a growth of 16%, is becoming increasingly attractive for tourists due to its innovation and hotel infrastructure and convention centers, which attracts both business segment

Although Bogotá, Cartagena, Medellín and Cali continue to attract the greatest number of tourists, new regions, municipalities and cities begin to be discovered within our tourist map, which we have sought to strengthen with the important work of Travel Agencies, such as marketing professionals from all our destinations, ”said Paula Cortés Calle, executive president of ANATO.
Likewise, he added: “This November 14 we will hold the First National Meeting of Incoming Tourism in Cartagena. We are certain that it will be a scenario that will allow both government entities, such as Travel Agencies, hotels, airlines, tourist guides, among others, to recognize what opportunities our country has to be an international destination ”.
