Brazilian Tourism Institute completes 53 years of foundation
Autarchy, which will be transformed into an agency, intends to double the number of international visitors and cooperate in the recovery of the national economy
Founded in 1966 by the then president Castelo Branco, Embratur (Brazilian Tourism Institute) completes 53 years of foundation on Monday (18). Responsible for promoting the country abroad and promoting tourism, the agency has undergone several transformations in these decades. In 2019, the institute resumed its political role in previous years, with President Jair Bolsonaro's decision to turn it into an agency in the future.
With a budget to promote the country abroad of around US $ 8 million, Brazil has lost its investment capacity by 82.36% since 2011. Nova Embratur will regain lost international competitiveness. For comparison, in 2017 Argentina invested $ 60 million and Mexico $ 400 million.
Gilson Machado Neto, president of Embratur, congratulated the agency and the servers for the date. He recalled the importance of tourism in the country's economic scenario, representing about 8% of Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
“The municipal model, which currently governs Embratur, is not competitive and change is necessary, a fact recognized by the President of the Republic and by the Mayors and Senate. It's 53 years playing a vital role for the country and now, you can be sure, it will be even longer, ”he said.

Machado recalled that still in 1998 Brazil surpassed the barrier of 5 million international tourists and that more than 20 years later this number slightly exceeds each of the 6 million. “It is a stagnation that will be remedied with the resumption of investments. Our goal is by 2022 to reach close to 12 million foreign visitors”.
With the transformation of Embratur into an agency, the agency will receive funds from the S System. It is expected that its budget will jump to about US $ 150 million. “Tourism is one of the main sources of income and employment in the country. Brazilian society can be sure that we will work to achieve our bold goals and cooperate with the country's financial recovery, ”concluded Gilson Machado Neto.
