International tourists increase in Mexico
According to the Sectur, more than fifteen and a half million travelers arrived by air between January and October. This amount represents an increase of 1.6% over what was registered in the same period of 2018
The arrival of international tourists to the country by air continues to increase. The Secretary of Tourism of Mexico Miguel Torruco Marqués informed that from January to October of this year the arrival of fifteen million 520 thousand travelers from abroad was registered, representing an increase of 1.6 percent, compared to the same period of 2018.
He said that during the first ten months of 2019, the largest number of international tourists who arrived by plane to the different international airports of the republic came, first, from the United States, with 55.5 percent of the total, followed by Canada, with 11.4 percent; United Kingdom, 3.2 percent; Colombia, 3.1 percent; and Argentina, with 2.2 percent.
These five countries, the main emitters of tourists to Mexico, represent 75.5 percent of the total and, together, showed an increase of 0.3 percent over the January-October period of the previous year.
The head of the Ministry of Tourism added that the four nations that showed the highest growth in the volume of air arrivals to Mexico between January and October 2019, compared to the previous year, were: Peru, with an increase of 14.7 percent ; France, with 9.1 percent; Colombia, 7.3 percent; and Canada, with 7.0 percent.
On the other hand, the airports that concentrated the greatest arrival of international tourists are: Cancun, Quintana Roo, with 41.7 percent; Mexico City, 26.6 percent, Los Cabos, Baja California Sur, 9.3 percent; Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, 7.7 percent; and Guadalajara, also in the state of Jalisco, with 5.8 percent.
These five air terminals account for 91.1 percent of total arrivals, showing a 1.5 percent increase over what was recorded in the same period of 2018.
Secretary Torruco Marqués pointed out that in the same first ten months, the arrival of international tourists by plane, through the main regions, reflected the following behavior: 66.9 percent of passengers came from North America; 16.1 percent, from South America and the Caribbean; 12.6 percent of Europe; and 3.5 percent from Asia.
Of those from the European continent, the arrivals of the United Kingdom stand out, with 504 thousand 410 tourists; Spain, with 330 thousand 489; and France, with 254 thousand 60 passengers. This represents 55.7 percent of Europe's total market, and records an increase of 2.1 percent over 2018 arrivals in the period indicated.
