IFEMA presents FITUR 2020 results
The Madrid fair has had 5% more registered professionals and a new record of visits
The International Tourism Fair, FITUR 2020, which celebrates its 40th anniversary this year, today closes its doors with an excellent balance of results. A special edition that has surpassed all the parameters regarding the call of companies, countries and regions and of the professionals of the world tourism industry.
This is revealed, the growth of professional participation by 5.16%, to reach the figure of 150,011 participants. In the international chapter, we must highlight the growth of 6, 4% in international visitors from 140 countries. In addition, a few hours after the end of the fair, it is expected that the public visit during the weekend will exceed 100,000 people., With this edition of FITUR will exceed 255,000 participants.
It is estimated that all this movement of people around FITUR has generated an economic impact of approximately 333 million euros in the city.
The good health of the tourism sector both in Spain and internationally, as the historical records of its indicators show in 2019, has had its impact on this powerful FITUR 2020 that, once again, has placed Madrid in the spotlight of the community international tourist, offering one of the most complete showcases of this industry. Proof of this has been the great offer gathered in this edition, which reaches its best historical figures: 255,000 participants; 918 regular exhibitors; 11,040 companies, 165 countries and regions, and an international participation of 56%. All this gathered along 69,697.5 m2 net of exposure, with a surface growth of 3.3%, and the occupation of 10 Feria de Madrid pavilions.
In global terms, the national presence has represented 44% of the participation quota of FITUR and the international 56%. This last figure represents a significant boost in the internationalization of the fair, mainly led by the increase in the participation of Asia-Pacific (+ 21.5%); Africa (+ 19.5%) both located this year in independent pavilions. The pavilions for Europe (+5.3) and America (+ 3.3%) have also grown.
FITUR, which brings together hundreds of exhibitors every year, highlights in this edition the fidelity of Adif, Hotusa Hotels, Melià Hotels, Paradores, Renfe, Turespaña and the magazine Traveling that have also completed 40 years of uninterrupted presence at the fair.
Great support from Casa Real and Institutional presence
The continuous support of the Royal House to FITUR, throughout its history, has also been revealed in this edition, celebrated with a 40th Anniversary Dinner at the Palacio de Cibeles, which presided over S.M. the king of Spain. Numerous Tourism Ministers from all over the world and prominent authorities of the government of Madrid and the entire country also participated in the dinner. The presence of S.M. the Queen at the opening ceremony of FITUR put the finishing touch to this special edition.
During the celebration of FITUR, the fair was visited by the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, twice, as well as more than 700 authorities, including ministers, governors and ambassadors from around the world, presidents and tourism advisors of all Autonomous Communities and Mayors of towns and cities, among others.

Equally remarkable has been the interest that, as every year, arouses the celebration of FITUR in the media worldwide. On this occasion, during the professional conference, the fair has accredited 7,625 journalists from 61 countries. In social networks, FITUR has been a reference during its days of celebration, managing to reach the figure of 217,000 followers on all its platforms. The hashtag # FITUR2020 was TT worldwide on opening day, reaching 105 million users with more than 17,000 accounts tweeting about the fair.

As for the novelties of this edition, note the wide deployment carried out by South Korea, as Fitur Partner Country, under the brand “Imagine your Korea” in coincidence with the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Korea and Spain. Some 25 organizations, including the Korean government, major local governments, travel agencies and airlines have been present at the Korean stand, in an effort to promote Korean tourism with the theme “Convergence of tradition and modernity”.
FITUR 2020 premiered the FITUR TALENT section, as well as the MEET AFRICA professional meeting platform aimed at promoting knowledge of the tourist offer of this continent and commercial alliances. Precisely the African continent has great potential for the development of common projects with Spanish companies, which on the other hand are increasingly present in this market. This was highlighted in the XI INVESTOUR Forum, held within the framework of FITUR, and which as every year jointly organized by the World Tourism Organization, (UNWTO), Casa África and FITUR,
The development of FITUR 2020 has also been marked by its outstanding business orientation, promoting content and spaces for B2B meetings, such as the FITUR B2B Match and FITUR MICE programs; for offering specialized content, knowledge forums and trends, and highlighting innovation and digital transformation as keys to competitiveness of the sector, in its different specialized sections: FITURTECHY, FITUR KNOW HOW & EXPORT, FITUR SCREEN, FITUR FESTIVALS, FITUR GAY (LGBT +) and FITUR HEALTH.
A complete content in which sustainability has been the great constant in response to the evolution of tourism itself and the cultural and social values associated with this activity. In this regard, the FITURNEXT Observatory also offered an interesting program, under the sponsorship of Bankia, which gave voice to the initiatives that won the 2020 challenge, focusing on how tourism can contribute to local economic development, and presented the FITURNEXT 2020 Report which analyzes more than 250 initiatives with positive social and environmental effects in terms of sustainability and with a high potential to be replicated.
In line with this commitment, FITUR, in collaboration with the Institute for Responsible Tourism, ITR, also awarded the “SUSTAINABLE STAND” Award for the first time.
