International tourism will generate 267 billion dollars in Mexico this year

The Secretary of Tourism of the Government of Mexico, Miguel Torruco Marqués, said today that given the current growth trend of the country's tourism sector, previous estimates indicate that during this year 46 million 200 thousand international tourists will arrive in our territory, who will leave an economic spill of 26 thousand 700 million dollars.
These figures would mean an increase of 2.7 percent in foreign tourists and 8.7 percent in foreign exchange, compared to 2019.
When specifying that 2020 will be another good year for the tourism industry of our country, he added that the creation of 95 thousand new jobs is also expected, which would reach a total of four million 500 thousand jobs in this industry, 2.1 percent higher than those recorded last year.
In addition, the projections indicate the construction of twenty thousand 446 hotel rooms, which would raise the national inventory to 850 thousand rooms in 24 thousand lodging establishments, 2.5 and 3.6 percent increase, respectively.
When inaugurating this morning in Cancun the "Quintana Roo Investment Summit 2020", organized by the Mexican Association of Real Estate Professionals, the head of Sectur indicated that the great potential of this sector, which contributes ten percent to the Global Gross Domestic Product and 8.7 percent of Mexico, and its wide opportunities to generate successful and productive businesses, make it prone to both domestic and foreign investment, a fundamental engine in the growth and development of any activity.
When speaking about the works that are being carried out in the entity, he said that these are works that will strengthen tourism in Quintana Roo, such as the expansion and improvement of the Chetumal airport, in charge of Airports and Auxiliary Services; and the authorization of the Zaragoza Canal towards the internal part of the Chetumal Bay, which is carried out by the Secretary of the Navy in coordination with the State Integral Port Administration.
The Secretary of Tourism of the Government of Mexico said that the investment in the works of the Zaragoza Canal: dredging 1.3 kilometers long, 50 meters wide and three meters deep, will amount to 128.6 million pesos; while the work at the airport will have a space of three thousand 700 square meters for waiting rooms, as well as a new control tower.
"We estimate that these works at the Chetumal airport will be finished next March, with a total investment of 146 million 869 thousand pesos," he said.
He added that, in the same way, as a boost to the economy of the capital of Quintana Roo, the creation of a free zone, similar to that of the northern border, which operates since January 1 of last year, which implies the reduction of the Value Added Tax from 16 to eight percent, and the Income Tax from thirty to twenty percent.
“It is a commitment of the president of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador with the state governor, Carlos Joaquín González, and as soon as we have more information about it, we will be communicating it,” he said.
He added that another important project for the region is the Mayan Train, which will be of great impact and benefit for Quintana Roo, which is working intensely through the National Tourism Promotion Fund.
"Considered the great work in the field of tourism infrastructure, it will have an investment of 138 thousand 425 million pesos and will begin operating in 2024. Its construction will begin at the end of April this year," he said.
Likewise, before the governor of the entity, Carlos Joaquín González, he said that Cancun, Puerto Morelos, Playa del Carmen, Tulum, Felipe Carrillo Puerto, Bacalar and Chetumal will have a Mayan Train station, which will favor numerous families with limited resources , in addition to that, in its route of more than 1,500 kilometers it will also detonate the economy of Chiapas, Tabasco, Campeche and Yucatán.
