INGUAT works with the private sector on a plan to support tourism in Guatemala

The Covid-19 health crisis affects an activity that involves 180,000 sources of direct employment and 460,000 indirect


The authorities of the Guatemalan Tourism Institute (INGUAT) have followed up on activities to rescue the tourist economy, which has been affected by the Coronavirus pandemic. Under this premise, they have held meetings with representatives of the private tourism sector, face-to-face and virtual, with the aim of continuing to work in consensus on a plan to support the sector's economy.

They have also held meetings with other government agencies to support requests from the sector in order to facilitate the interrelation of specific issues with the different entities.

The Guatemalan Chamber of Tourism (CAMTUR), with the support of the Association for Research and Social Studies (ASIES), as well as the Guatemalan Association of Exporters (AGEXPORT) and associates, presented a proposal for a plan to reactivate and support the sector affected tourist.

In addition, it was agreed to establish a technical table to follow up on the topics discussed to structure and execute a consensual plan.

Tourism is one of the most important generators in the Guatemalan economy, which has generated nearly 180,000 sources of direct employment and 460,000 indirect jobs. This sector is one of the main contributions to the development of the country. Aware of its great value, the authorities of the governing body and the participants of these meetings have pointed out the importance of working together to support micro, small and medium-sized entrepreneurs, as well as all members of the value chain and subsectors of the tourism.

INGUAT called on the Guatemalan population to heed the recommendations of the authorities so that, once this health crisis is overcome, tourism can resume and enjoy the country's natural and cultural benefits.

The institute published an emotional video with which they want to raise awareness of the importance of staying home. In the clip you can see several tourist places in the country and it ends with the message: "When all this happens, everything will be waiting for you".
