Mexico prepares to revive tourism
The federal Secretary of Tourism held meetings to coordinate efforts to reopen the sector
The Secretary of Tourism of the Government of Mexico, Miguel Torruco Marqués, held three virtual work meetings today: with the members of the National Chamber of Air Transportation (Canaero); of the Confederation of National Chambers of Commerce, Services and Tourism (Concanaco-Servytur); and with the mayors of Magical Towns of the south-southeast region of the country.
In addition to analyzing the particular problems of these sectors, in each of these sessions the participants were introduced to the digital promotion strategy for containing the crisis caused by the Covid-19 coronavirus pandemic and the head of Sectur announced that it is being working with the Ministry of Health for the next reopening of the sector, in coordination with Undersecretary Hugo López-Gatell, with the protocol and health guidelines for the opening of tourist establishments, which will be announced shortly.
During the meeting with the members of the National Chamber of Air Transport, the head of Sectur expressed that in 2019 the tourism sector showed positive results with the arrival of 45 million international tourists and a foreign exchange fund of 24 thousand 563 million dollars, with growth in both indicators of nine percent, compared to 2018.
Likewise, the Tourist Balance registered a balance in favor of 14 thousand 715 million dollars, which placed it in the first place, above other sectors of the national economy.
He added that for this year, the Ministry of Tourism was developing projects that would maintain this growth line, but the Covid-19 coronavirus pandemic appeared and everything changed, seriously damaging the country's economy, the tourism industry and, within this, to the air transport sector.
In this situation, Sectur and its digital platform VisitMexico began the design of a promotion strategy for the containment of the crisis and the revival of the sector, which was launched several weeks ago.
In the analysis of the emergency, which will cause changes in traveler trends once activities are restarted globally, it was found that Canadian and American tourism will lean towards regional trips, with flights of no more than four hours and average, which places Mexican destinations in that range.
Secretary Torruco Marqués stressed that together the sending markets of Canada and the United States represent 67 percent of the total international tourism that visits us, thanks to the air connectivity that exists with Mexico and the opening of new flights.
For his part, the president of Canaero, Luis Noriega, expressed that air transport is an industry used to challenges because it has faced many crises, such as that of S-11 in 2001 and the H1N1 influenza epidemic in 2009; However, the current Covid-19 pandemic is something that they had never faced before, so the crisis it caused is leaving the aviation sector in a situation of great weakness to a degree that they did not know and that It presents tremendous challenges for the future.
However, he pointed out that by the end of this year, national airlines will be flying to both national and international destinations, but he specified that this return will take place very cautiously, gradually, with very few routes, which will be those in which they can operate. without losses, which will be determined by the demand and by the operating costs of each one of them.
Later, when leading the video meeting with the members of the Confederation of National Chambers of Commerce, Services and Tourism (Concanaco-Servytur), Secretary Torruco Marqués assured that the crisis that the tourism industry is experiencing today is the most severe after World War II, which led to the design and implementation of the strategy presented to them.
Therefore, he thanked the president of the Concanaco-Servytur, José Manuel López Campos, for having joined with all his members in this strategy of containment and promotion, in an act of unity that puts all the efforts of the tourism sector on the same channel and in a single direction, supporting a strategy that is fully agreed with the entire sector, both public and private and social.
In turn, José Manuel López Campos asserted that the VisitMexico platform will make a difference in the way of promoting tourism in our country. And he added that “after seeing the great challenges we have, I am optimistic that there is a line, a set course in the way tourism is going to be promoted. And there is nothing to be thankful for, because what we all seek is to benefit the sector and in that sense we will always do what is most convenient for tourism. Adding all of us and with strategic alliances is the way we can achieve more and better results, ”he said.
In addition, as one more window of opportunity, the manager made available to Sectur the offices that the Concanaco-Servytur has in the Mexican Republic, with its 256 affiliated Chambers and a coverage of 900 locations, in addition to the one they have in Shanghai, plus another six that will soon open in different countries in Europe.
This day, the secretary Torruco Marqués also led a meeting with the mayors and mayors of Magical Towns of the south-southeast region of the country, to whom the strategy was also presented and who made suggestions and requests.
This was the fourth meeting of the holder of Sectur with this group, with which he already added this exercise of work with the 121 Magical Towns of Mexico.
